They have barbells with fixed weights but obviously none of their weights are real heavy. I will never go back to a PF again but they do have a good business plan. They cater to causal gym goers many of whom barely use their membership.

Interestingly there’s one PF somewhere in California that has bench presses and squat racks.

I can understand not wanting to spend a TON of money on a gym when just starting, but you certainly get what you pay for with gyms. Stretch your budget a bit, nothing crazy, but explore some mid-priced gyms. Snap Fitness, Anytime Fitness, YMCA, etc. Remember that it’s an investment in yourself, so pick a place that gives you the best chances to succeed at a good value.

Yeah I know YMCA can be hit or miss. I don’t live in BR anymore but I never belonged to one when I was there. I always liked Anytime Fitness in BR. All the locations were decent if not great, hardly ever crowded, and pretty much every part of town had one.

Anytime Fitness. I’ve noticed these they are in small strip centers and small. The reason I bring it up is that herein Katy and Houston you can find some at times that are empty.

Which would be great starting out with your kid. As mentioned, he needs to start on free weights and go to machines

I came in here to post the same thing. They're pretty small but they are the emptiest gyms I've ever been to.

I’m far from a gym purist or snob, but they call it Planet Fatness for a reason.

Love how I got down voted for telling the truth. You can get a good workout at PF but if you are just getting your son into lifting don't start him off having frickarounditus.

I left PF because they never replaced old equipment. And smith machines gave me lower back pain.

Yes they are usually a smaller club. Most average around 3500-5000 sqft., but some can be double or triple in size.

They are perfect for folks that workout at odd times. Even the busier locations will only have 12 people or so max during off times. I would avoid the rush though. They can get packed during that post-work crowd from 4:30-7pm.

New one in Covington is pretty nice. Well worth the $10. I was hesitant to go and take a tour with the wife because I had a preconceived idea as to what it would be but they have such a variety of things to do there (not sure if they’re all the same) that I signed up immediately. They don’t have super heavy weights or barbells but I’m too old for that stuff anyway. Smith machines and 75 dumbbells are fine for me.
