I'm looking for an inexpensive place to lift weights with my son. What can you tell me about Planet Fitness?

Don't be too awesome or they will kick you out.
You can get a good workout there but no heavy stuff.
What kind of lifting do you want to do?

Nothing fancy or heavy. Just starting with my son

Can't do that at Planet Fitness, at least not at my local one. All they have are Smith Machines. I wouldn't want to train your son how to lift on a Smith Machine.

Find a real gym, not one that has pizza day.

Planet fitness is the social justice warrior of fitness.

If he is just starting out, don't take him there. He needs to be doing the basic barbell lifts. Put him on the starting strength program, StrongLifts or greyskull. Please do not try and program yourself for him.
Find a local gym with a power cage and get to work.

If this is training for sports, I would not recommend it. Like lsu777 said he would be better served learning the basic lifts which you can't really do at planet fitness.
Machines are good as accessory lifts but not the best way to learn technique.

Go join a snap. They're not expensive and usually good weight set ups. But please before you do, read and learn about some gym etiquette.

If you want something cheap, a lot of cities have rec centers. For example, BREC has a gym that is 15/mo. No contract. Has a power rack, dumbells, machines, and cardio equipment: LINK

They really don't have barbell stuff in there?

Monroe and WM do not. Just 5-6 Smith Machines. Dumbbells only go to 75 too.

No, not a single barbell. Smith machine and dumbbells only. Then life fitness machines selectorized only. Only plate loaded is every PF has atleast 1 hammer strength plate loaded leg press.

Just don't go there. That's honestly the best advice I can give you

The 24X7's on the Northshore (Covington, etc.) are pretty good.

PF in Covington making its mark on society here. sorry, there's just no getting over no barbells and no dumbbells over 80lbs.

You should workout at Stone Creek. It's amazing, and the scenery is top notch.

very nice place.
more $ than what i spend for a gym
location of it is very bad for me, not convenient in any way
too much scenery always backfires.
