GiantBomb article

quote:

NEO will feature a higher clock speed than the original PS4, an improved GPU, and higher bandwidth on the memory. The documents we've received note that the HDD in the NEO is the same as that in the original PlayStation 4, but it's not clear if that means in terms of capacity or connection speed. Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a “Base Mode” which will run on the currently available PS4 and a “NEO Mode” for use on the new console.

That was very detailed. Hopefully this will chill the people freaking out that they are going to abandon their ps4.

Will buy.

I wonder if UC4 will be a Neo title, as the article says devs can release Neo capable titles before the Neo releases, which leads me to believe UC4 will be one of those.

Be interesting to see if the Xbox gets an upgrade in response.

I'm curious to know if any deals will be offered for people willing to trade in their old ps4.

I still think this is a horrible idea. Incremental upgrades during one hardware cycle?

I'd rather just get a PC.

As someone who basically owns a PS4 to play their exclusives this really pisses me off tbh. I would have gladly waited for this version if I had know it would be a thing. I don't play mine all that often, so I would definitely prefer to have the best possible experience when I do use it.

I really hope they offer some sort of trade in.

Horrible idea. So now the devs have to make two different versions of the same game.

So the developers have to spend more money on development and they aren't going to get any more sales out of it.

Good job Sony. Piss off your devs and fracture your playerbase at the same time.

So the only thing staying the same is the HDD?

Why don't they just fricking call it a PlayStation 5?

This is a terrible idea, but Sony fanboys will lap this shite up as usual.

That's like saying making a PC version requires you to make 100s of versions of the same game.

Nah, be like developing for a PC. Ultra settings on PS4.5, Medium settings for PS4.

ETA: oauron beat me to it

Yall should chill. This is an incremental upgrade, enough to add some minor post-processing effects.

Although, I could fuel the rage and paranoia by adding that it's possible developers could intentionally cripple the non-NEO version of a game in order to create a more perceivable difference in quality.

So they just flip a switch and that happens?

Essentially, yes. Except on a PC it's a drop down menu not a switch.

You can also compare it to cross platform titles now that downscale to work on XBone at a lower resolution than that of the current PS4.

OK. I will grant you that.

Still... Why fracture your player base?

Looks like the console is becoming a PC without a piece by piece upgrade ability. The pace of changing tech will no longer support 3 to 5 years between consoles.
