Developers are all pissed about this

They can be pissed, the days of 6-8 year console cycles are a thing of the past. Plenty have already talked about limitations on current consoles as well so it's not like everyone holds the same opinion. Developers are probably just upset they have to work on one more version now.

Assuming his source is representative of the whole, that is the most alarming part of all this.
How? Even PS4 exclusives are now making games for 2 consoles instead of 1. Cross-platform you're adding the PS4.5 to the PS4, Wii U, Xbone, and PC. Of course they aren't going to be happy with extra work for a minimal upgrade in performance.

I'll never buy another piece of Sony hardware.

Depending on how Microsoft responds, they may have finally pushed me over to the master race.

If I have to pay out the nose, I'd rather get actual performance, not this half assed version of upgrading.

Why?

Because they wanted to improve their 3yr old system so it runs smoother frames at 1080p which is a must for VR?

Come on bro... Grow up.

This makes me happy that I got a PC and just picked one of the consoles to play exclusives on. Now, instead of having (well, its not a necessity, but I'm a geek and like new shite) to buy a new console for an incremental upgrade, I can just buy a new GPU or something if I need to upgrade that will see more bang for my buck.

This is the most honest answer here

I wouldn't say they are a thing of the past, it's still a very viable enterprise. I think the problem is that they lost sight of the fact that for a console to have a long shelf-life, they have to accept the fact that they are going to lose money on it for the first half of that shelf-life.

I remember reading that the previous 2 generations didn't finally hit the black until like year 4 or 5 of their existence and it's because they used expensive parts in order to "future proof" the consoles. The current generation was already regarded as being behind the curve.

Now, I could be wrong on this, but the current consoles seem less prepared for the long haul than the previous 2 or 3 generations.

I think they made smarter design choices like X86 architecture but overall it's true. They launched $400 machines and the PS3 for example launched at $600. Factor those prices in with inflation and you can see how they aren't as powerful as before.

Exactly. I remember saving up all my money from my summer construction job after 8th grade so I could buy a 360. It literally took the entire summer to save for it. I got my Xbone as X-mas present in undergrad, but it would have taken me like 2 weeks of waiting tables to buy one. It's pretty clear to me that the entry version of these consoles is a cheaper overall product.

People don't want to buy a $600 console. Maybe $500 would work but $400 clearly does. I'm fine with that, they just can't do another 8 year console cycle. That was way too long.
