Overall, I don't see it as a good thing for console owners. I won't be buying it.

I don't think it will and think the article does a good job explaining why it won't.

But there is still too much unknown to say anything or even debate it further. Especially in regards to an upgrade program.

You can also compare it to cross platform titles now that downscale to work on XBone at a lower resolution than that of the current PS4.

Which requires work from the devs to do. Why do you think so many PC ports end up being trash?

Looks like the console is becoming a PC without a piece by piece upgrade ability.

Phil Spencer hinted at something like this. Feels like that would really be the only right direction to go if this is going to become a more standard practice.

Has nothing to do with PC ports being poor lol.

And no, it really doesn't. Downscaling resolution/textures is extremely simple for developers and something they're already doing between PS4 and Xbox One now.

Gamespot will offer some kind of trade in. They've done it for 3ds,vita, etc. the ps4 won't be some low demand product. People will flock to buy a used one there for cheap.

So games have to have a base mode and a Neo mode, but how is that going to make games better? Isn't that making it harder to produce good games in a landscape where games are mostly shipped super broken anyway?

I guess the biggest benefit will be handling 4k. Other than that, games may run a bit smoother and "see that grass way over there? Doesn't it look pretty?"

There were rumors that xbox was doing the same thing but Phil Spencer said it wasn't true.

Starting in October, every PS4 game is required to ship with both a “Base Mode” which will run on the currently available PS4 and a “NEO Mode” for use on the new console.

What does this even mean? PS4 mode gonna basically be like playing a PC game on low/medium quality?

I will be shocked if Xbox doesn't do anything to counter the ps4 neo. Why would new customers pick an already shitty Xbox over a ps4 neo?

Xbox isn't shitty and they already started talking about something like this before the PS4k/Neo released.

how is this really much diff than what they did with ps, ps2 then ps3? They had several versions of each. Hell they even came out with one called PSone.

For multiplats it kind of is. More games run at 720p or 900p than 1080p and most of those still have framerate dips.

Even the exclusives struggle as the system is just underpowered.

It isn't like the PS3 where initial multiplats titles ran like garbage, but then you had beautiful exclusives like Uncharted 2 running smooth as butter.

Once devs learned to program for the PS3, the discrepancy between multi platform titles became much smaller and the PS3 had advantages in some areas due to better hardware and the Blu Ray disk format.

Xbox One is inferior all the way around sans the exclusive franchises only available on the Xbox brand and multimedia capabilities. I suppose some may prefer the Xbox one gamepad to the DS4 as well

Those were "slims" though, right? With bigger hard drives. They didn't have better tech.

I don't really care for this but I don't see how this will hurt any games. It won't make games less playable on the regular version.

That depends. If NEO is a strong success, why will developers waste time optimizing graphics or framerate for the PS4?

It would be smart business for Microsoft to shelve plans on releasing an upgraded console (modular or not) to wait to see how devs and users adapt to Sony's product. My estimation is that Neo won't amount to a whole lot as long as the Xbox One remains as is. Devs aren't going to put a lot of time and effort into enhancements for NEO when they know they still have to optimize it for both PS4 and Xbox One.

If Xbox goes a similar route, the PS4 will likely become a far less desirable platform to game on.

Because it isn't that big of an issue. Tons of developers already do this with PC/console multiplats. Hell even the the xbone is a little worst than the ps4. Take a brand new release for example Dark Souls. Xbone runs at 900p. PS4 runs at 1080p. It didn't cause the developer some big issue to downscale the Xbone.
