I went this route for my Mame setup. Running project hyperspin from underground gamer before it shutdown. Custom built control board, in a NFL Blitz 2000 cab I refurbished.

Just ordered my Raspberry Pi 3 kit.
I'm intending on using my XBox One controller and mapping my buttons so it will work. There's a video on YouTube that shows how to do it, so I'm fairly confident I can get it to work.
At this point, I don't know exactly what I'm doing, but I believe I can get it all figured out with all of the help in this thread
