quote:Did you have any issues mapping buttons for your gamepad? The prompt to do that should come up automatically after boot up when it detects a controller it doesn't recognize. However, you can run it manually by hitting the "Start" button and going to "Configure Input." Maybe try mapping them again?
When i go into a game i play, the controls are nonexistent.
Also, what gamepad did you buy and what system are you trying to play?
Didn't have any problem mapping them at the start. I bought the 8bitdo one suggested here. When I'm in retropie the controls are fine but it's when I get into a game is when I am having the problem. I'm going to try to research it
quote:I don't know what was up with CivilDawg's card but I've reformatted mine several times with new images. Maybe some cards just handle it better than others. Solid state media does have a finite number or writes but it should be able to handle a re-image.
They can only handle one formatting and that is it! Kinda like rewrite CDs.
quote:I haven't messed with bluetooth controllers on Retropie myself (all of mine are wired) but you might check out this guide:
8bitdo

ETA: Well, this might not be that helpful actually. If the controller is working fine outside of games that's likely another problem. Maybe try some other emulators / other games to see how widespread it is.

You seem like a pro on this so here's my problem from a few months back:
***
I can see the drive but cannot format because it says there's no media present.
I also cannot open it for the same reason. I think the Retro Pi linux OS in unpacked and making it impossible to identify for the PC.
When I plug in the Pi, it runs as normal through all of its commands (retro pi boot screen and all) until it gets to running the system.
It then says there's a problem with the installation.
I need to find a way to reverse this then possibly my PC can read the SD card, and when it does I can format it then. There has to be ways to revert the process if the wrong OS is installed for the wrong Pi right? None of these sites cover this in the steps for adding Retro Pi.
***
I cannot put anything on the SD card because it says there's no media...to the point where it just thinks I have an adapter and that's it. No card for storage.
So that means I cannot even select the drive to format it.
That's why I asked if there was any command line to undo the retropie setup...
miesto, those command lines were "not found"
***
I think a formatter that can recognize an unpacked linux OS on windows will work. The only I can Find is GParted, BUT that is a linux program that will not run on Windows.
Why does this seem impossible to do?
***
My android phone read the card that Windows could not. I tried to format on the phone. It worked, but Windows can still not read the card. It says insert disc. On formatters it says no media to format.
That should be all of it, right? I should be set and ready to go? What if my microSD card reader just went bad in the middle of doing this?
quote:
I tried to get my Raspberry Pi up and running and wanted to do Retro Pi first. I downloaded the disc image for the wrong version, however.
When installing the OS I get this:
Illegal Instruction
So, I know how to undo this, right? Just wipe the SD card and try again with the other Retro Pi disc image.
HOWEVER now that the OS is all unpacked on the SD card my windows PC cannot read the card. It can see the drive and
says there's no media to overwrite because it's already blank. That is not accurate because the Retro Pi OS is on there.
So, I need some help. I need to erase my SD that is invisible in my windows comp. I have done a lot of research and ways to fix this and none have worked.
I think it comes down to the terminal I have after my Illegal Installation message. I have pi@retropie:~$ and a blinking cursor. I feel if I enter the right string the entire OS will pack itself back up and I can use my SD on my PC to format and then install the correct version. What is that string is the question though.

Have you tried SD Card Formatter? It's a free tool that's help me before when my SD card appeared to be hosed. You can download it here.
After you install the program (which comes in a compressed .zip file) you may want to try formatting it with the size adjustment option. You can get to it by clicking the "Option" button...
...and then setting File Size Adjustment to "On." Also note the "Format Type." I would stick to "Quick" for your first attempt but then maybe try the "Full (Erase)" setting as a second attempt if needed.
After that, make sure you have the correct drive letter of your SD card and click the "Format" button. Then see if you can re-image your card with Win32 Disk Imager. If none of that works, I'd just buy another SD card. They're so cheap that it's probably not worth the effort to spend hours trying to troubleshoot this sort of issue. You can get a 32 GB off of Amazon for 10 bucks and 64 GB if you are willing to spend an additional $6. I hope that helps.

I can't figure out these MAME and Neo Geo roms. I've got everything else loaded up and ready to go, but I can't figure out if these roms need everything in one folder and where they are supposed to go
Also, what's the easiest way to make all emulators full screen on my TV?

quote:It could still be but if the SD Formatter tool can see the card and it's full capacity, you'll know it's simply a problem with Window's not being able to see the Linux file structure. If even that can't see the card, I'd say you have a bad SD card or maybe a bad reader.
I was concerned it was the memory card reader as well.
You can rule out the reader itself by plugging the SD card into some other device to see if it's readable, like a camera, phone / tablet, laptop, or game console that accepts SD cards. But yeah, if you're tired of messing with it, I'd just buy another one.

Where the MAME roms go depends on what emulator you are trying to use. I'd copy them to each of the below paths and see how they run. You may find one emulator runs them better than others depending on the games you have.
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-mame4all
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame
Neo Geo roms need to go here:
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/neogeo
...but keep in mind that the Neogeo BIOS file, neogeo.zip, also needs to go in the same path as the roms. This is different than most systems.
The roms for both MAME and Neo Geo are a zip file. You want to keep them as a zip and none of them should need their own folder under the paths mentioned above.
For example, the contents of your "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/neogeo" folder should look something like this, depending on what games you have:
garou.zip <----Game rom
mslug.zip <----Game rom
mslug3.zip <----Game rom
neogeo.zip <----BIOS
shocktro.zip <----Game rom
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-mame4all
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-libretro
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame

Sometimes when I download a MAME rom and open it there are a bunch of zip files for the game..which one do I use ?
re: Raspberry Pi EmulatorPosted by GeauxAggie972 on 1/14/17 at 2:47 pm to VL Lsutiger
What site are you using and which games is it? Normally, it should be just one zip file that holds all of the smaller ones and you just thrown that main zip file into the roms

quote:It should be one zip file but the contents of every game will vary. There are more user friendly ways of finding this info, but you can try downloading this dat file which has the proper file contents for every MAME 0.37b5 rom. You can use it to check the contents of your game, though there is still no guarantee the game will work.

Ok thanks...I was looking for nba jam T.E. I couldn't find it that's the one I'm having issues with

nba jam T.E.
nbaug14.bin
nbaug19.bin

nbauj19.bin
te-u12.bin
te-u13.bin

te-uj12.l4
te-uj16.bin
te-uj17.bin
te-uj18.bin
te-uj20.bin
te-uj22.bin
te-uj23.bin
If your downloaded file doesn't contain those files, it's a bad rom or a different version romset incompatible with the version of MAME Retropie is running.
