re: PC Discussion - Gaming, Performance and Enthusiasts

Would 1200w work on your setup? I have a Lepa G1200 that's being wasted right now

Total draw on the 3 GPUs at full throttle can get over 1,000W and that's not considering the other components I'm running. I would be a lot more comfortable going with a high-efficiency 1300W+.

It sure would be nice to know why this one went out so quickly, though.

How much are you wanting for that?

Shit, that sucks. And it reminds me that I need to buy a surge protector ASAP.

I have this one in my room:

I had my monitors, computer, a couple of other minor things connected to it. But after I added the 280x to my main rig, the breaker couldn't handle it, so I ran an extension cord through the wall to plug my rig into the living room outlet. Didn't have a spare surge protector, though. Decided to just plug it in and get one the next day. Totally forgot about it.

That's a good PSU you have, though. I would be very surprised if it killed any of your hardware.

I hope you are right. For nearly 400 bucks it better protect my stuff.

So any ideas how I can avoid this in the future? Will a failing PSU cause the breaker to to trip? I mean I know I'm running the PSU pretty hard since it is mining nearly 24/7 but I still expected more than 2 months life out of it.

Sometimes they just die. The bitcoin and litecoin forums are full of people bitching about just about every brand of PSU failing from days to months after they bought them.

Like $150 or something like that since it's only a few months old

Yeah, even the most solid/expensive units can succumb to the thrashing of mining. People have their favorite brands and swear up and down there's never been a problem, but when you start mining you try to get the best hash for dollar -- that often means putting 90-100% load on PSUs because "the 850w was on sale."

When my ASIC miners arrive I might just convert my mining computer to a full-time gaming computer. Then again I guess ASICs are susceptible to failures the same as conventional computers.

Did you pre-order ASICS somewhere?

I'm really hoping the scrypt community is serious about forking as many coins as possible to scrypt-jane to continue resisting ASICS. It was one of the major reasons behind the advent of litecoin in the first place.

Yeah I am in on the first-batch for a couple of the Alpha Industries ASIC units. I know I am evil and what ruins the community and bla bla bla. I don't think scrypt-jane will be an impact on the major coins until after ASICs have been well-established, so I figure I will at least get several months if not a year+ before I have to worry. By then I will have most likely made back what I put in plus some.

Just purchased a new SSD for my HTPC. The ASUS Impact is the first and only board I have which accepts M.2 interface. I could use SATA III, in this compact build it lets me eliminate a SATA and SATA power cable.

M.2 120GB

nevermind, battle with "boom boom" lived up to it's name and that's too many explosions for the cpu

Is there anything else I'll need besides the parts for putting one together? I have screwdrivers of several sizes already.
