I'm trying to convince Mrs. Midnight to watch Burn After Reading with me. One of her few flaws is that she is not a big fan of the Coen Brothers.

So, this morning I was on my computer and suddenly got a BOOTMGR Image is corrupt. System Cannot boot screen. There was a windows update this morning, computer has been boxed up for a several days since I moved. Turned it off and unplugged it, turned it on and it has been running fine. Any ideas? Is there something I should check to make sure everything is ok?

Great news. I've had wonky stuff like that with a Windows Update - I was trying to get things shut down during a power outage - I have a battery backup, but when I shut down, I got the "Please do not turn off computer. Windows update 1 out of 23"

Uh-oh. That can't be good. The battery died at about update 20 or 21.

It was a little wonky, but windows was smart enough to fix itself.

If it is behaving normally in the windows environment, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Maybe keep an eye on it for a couple of days.

At least it seemed to resolve itself. Could've been Windows update being screwy, or just a connection that got jostled in the move (in which case it may still loose, so worth opening it up and making sure cables are seated firmly).

I was going to suggest - "check cabling and reboot" - but he rebooted without checking cabling and that worked anyway.

If he's not worried he'll mess something else up while checking the cabling, it's certainly worth a shot.

Heck, with the beast - as it is - I had a loose Sata cable to the optical drive and a poorly seated DIMM that I had to resolve before installing Windows for the new round. And I had checked all those things half a dozen times.

Checked the cables and they are all good. Maybe my computer just wanted to give me a butthole puckering moment this morning.

And as we move forward with my project, ILike - I can say that I liked the Noctua mounting system more and more, every time I had to do it (4 total, not counting the dry run). Is it demonstrably easier than the Hyper 212? No. However, I did the Hyper 212 first and that may bias the ultimate analysis.

(ETA: Something I didn't like - the Noctua paste tended to build up in a ring around the outside of the core area, rather than make a more consistently round blob with "veins" as the AS5 tends to do. In videos, the Noctua paste spreads as expected, so maybe I'm not used to the dispenser tip - it seems much less precise than the AS nozzle. That could have been poor technique on my part, but I only had 1 application that I was happy with, and that was the dry run.)

Is it as quiet as the Hyper 212 with 2 fans? I can't tell the difference. The chassis fans on the Fractal R5 are louder on high speed. It's still about the quietest computer I've built - noise is only really discernible with the optical or spinner going.

And, Windows 10 (I skipped, completely, Vista and 8 - except for some limited Vista on government computers) has been good so far. Still tailored far too much for mobile/touchscreen users for my taste, but Classic Shell takes 95% of that problem away with a single step. I'm going to let the AS5 cure and then do some benchmarks before OCing around the holidays. Maybe by then I'll have a GPU installed.

The price of Bitcoins is making a move I see....

Is it time to trade them again?

I don't know, I'm kind of done with that unless GPU mining becomes profitable in some indirect way again. A time machine would be handy.

Steam Link and Controller will be here on Tuesday, anyone else tested these?

Should let me farm for material in Fallout while laying in bed.

Let me know if it works well. I may end up getting one for some in-bed gaming. Might help me get through some more tedious games.

In other news, updating to Marshmallow has done some sort of voodoo magic to my battery life.

The Steam Link, to my surprise... streams better with less latency than my steam boxes do. I'm thinking because Windows is out of the way.

For $50 bucks, its a welcomed pickup. Just remember that you must hard wire because WiFi is not a good experience.

I think this would be great if I could use a controller, but since I can't I will pass.

Any streaming sucks on Wifi, the latency "hiccups" at times. Its better than the PS4 to PS TV on WiFi, but still not the seamless experience you get from hardwire. Its not much to hardwire to your entertainment center. I used to run several wires from my computer room to each piece of hardware in my home. Now I changed to 1 wire to my lvingroom and 1 wire to my bedroom. Then from there I have a 4 port switch to divide to my Rokus, PS4, PSTV, WiiU, Steam Link and HTPCs

Maybe think about the one time running of 1 single enthernet wire. It will improve the online and streaming experience for all your products.
