If things are so bad that CPU/RAM/HDD tests won't cooperate, and/or I don't have components to swap out, my first RMA is the motherboard.

In hindsight, I can see that clearly, now. The fact the failure point has seemingly moved to the DIMM slots (or the sticks themselves) from a Windows 10 BSOD - almost screams "BAD MOTHERBOARD" - but I had not, as yet, had that apparently floating point of failure. Where I last had it posting, I was getting a consistent point of failure - boot, post, bios, Windows 10 load -> BSOD. Now, I should have run memtest at that point in FreeDOS - but I can't imagine (if they had passed) I would have done anything except RMA the processor (however unlikely that failure is).

Obviously you have much more experience, relevant experience and just sheer reps at the process. I was trying to hear what you were saying. At the same time, you were obviously handcuffed by relying on what I was telling you.

I know to RMA the motherboard in future builds - unless it clearly isn't. Live and learn, I suppose. (Should I try to swap or wait for the new memory? )

ETA: Should we discuss the feasibility of building a HTPC around a i7-6700k?

Admittedly, I have no idea why the symptom changed after the CPU swap. Should I assume you've tried clearing CMOS?

Personally, I'd do the motherboard--- or maybe whatever's faster because I'm not patient, and I am less inclined to rule out the RAM quite as quickly as the CPU. If it's G.Skill's RMA turnaround time vs. Amazon's motherboard ship time, do the motherboard. If you'd have to RMA either one with the manufacturer, I don't know which would be faster. ASUS can drag arse sometimes, but they also offer cross-shipping.

I did not. The more research I do on similar failures has that on the checklist - I'm trying to figure out the reasoning. I've hesitated until now, because I'm not sure if that reverts the bios or not. (In the old days, we just pulled the battery. This one has pins but no jumper. The manual says, no $hit, short it with a paperclip for 10 seconds. I think I have a jumper to do that, but seems strange.)

So, is there a downside to clearing the CMOS?

(ETA: And I have a new motherboard in, with memory on the way - at least those will have return time remaining, if the original parts are not at fault.)

ETA: - Well I did clear the CMOS and - no effect. Same red Ram light. Hitting memOK button causes it to flash, reset, then back to a solid red memory LED.

For future reference, clearing CMOS only reverts the bios back to default settings. I'm assuming you haven't done a whole lot with the bios aside from maybe setting boot priority and RAM XMP. One would clear CMOS on the off-chance that a bios setting is preventing one thing from recognizing/initializing/etc. something else. It's just a routine diagnostic step that rarely solves the problem in my experience, but worth attempting anyway.

I've noticed a lot of motherboards now just have a button to clear CMOS rather than a jumper. Paperclip works in a pinch, but that is pretty odd for the manual to suggest that vs. having a button or a jumper.

You are in possession of a new motherboard right now? I'd install it right now.

I'm going to do that and try everything else as is before opening the new memory. Thanks for all the help.

Go ahead and RMA the old board and order a case, PSU, and storage too

I'm going slowly - let me get 1 up, first - then figure out what is left that's good - THEN do build #2 around that.

In all seriousness, I think I'll just buy 2 of everything next time, RMA anything that's broken, then build a second, identical 1 - if I live long enough to do another build.

I kind of assumed that they've been taking their time in merely applying a series of low-cost bandaids and there were some things that couldn't be fixed without spending way more money than they'd even consider for a port.

quote:

Even publisher Warner Bros. has acknowledged its failed to fix two of the initial bugs that plagued the game. A blog post warns players of a GPU issue affecting Windows 7 users that crops up after "extended gameplay sessions" and sees a hard drive paging issue occur - in fact it sounds like the hard drive paging issue that originally caused so much trouble with stuttering. To solve this, you need to relaunch the game.

The post also advises Windows 10 owners to have "at least 12GB of system RAM" in order to "operate without paging and provide a smoother gameplay experience." Recommended specs still stand at 8GB of RAM.

Looks like I'm good there at least.

quote:

"We are still working with our GPU partners to add full support for SLI and Crossfire," Warner wraps up. "In addition, we are working with these partners to address stability issues on certain cards related to the latest drivers."

I keep hearing this game is the worst of the 4 anyway. Coyote gave it to me since he got it free with his 980 Ti, so I'll probably just run through it after I finish the Witcher expansion pack.

Before this last "fix", I could run and play the game fine. Have nearly 25hrs into it. Now the game is unlauchable.

How far in are you?

I'm really taking my time getting everything outside the main storyline for HoS. I love the world.

Arkham Knight was very average. I couldn't even finish it and I liked Origins.

I was given two main missions, one involving a dead guy and the other involving a house. I completed the first. Not sure how far I am in completing it, but I also did what appears to be all of the side missions. Some extra question marks to visit if I feel like it later as well.

(Note: these aren't spoilers, and they're not even tied to the main story)

ILike - I'm sending this from the beast.

It appears to have been a MB that failed extremely early - you are vindicated again. I was just short of this point before when the $hitstorm started. At this point, I'm up on Firefox and classic shell. Since I ran out of the Noctua thermal paste, I had to go back to my leftover AS5.

So far so good - but I don't want to jinx it again, so fingers and toes crossed. Thanks again for you help and moral support.
