You're correct. Consoles have hampered gaming for 30 years.

That is oversimplified but also not completely remaking the game or anything. They already do it for different platforms. In theory it needs to run on all the systems. This isn't that different from what IOS developers have to do now.
I just think the games are more complex and the stakes are higher for non-mobile platforms on an individual consumer level. I've bought IOS games for our 2nd generation iPad that don't run well enough to be enjoyable. The difference is I paid $1 for them (or they were free) so I don't care.

Think about the real world example of Shadow of Mordor. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions not only had inferior graphics, but they also got a dumbed down nemesis system which was the main thing that made that game unique and worth playing. That's a gameplay difference, not a graphical one.

And just so I'm clear, I had these same questions when the Steam boxes were being announced a couple of years ago.

Maybe allow M/KB on Xbox? Otherwise, they'll have a bad time.

This is so overblown and exaggerated
The only time it really ever is night and day different is when it comes down to the 1% of elite PC gamers. Otherwise its a wash and a lot more about overall playing ability. I played with a controller on PC for months, still did just fine

As far as the OP, I really hope this happens sooner rather than later

That's also a completely different generation of games for a different platform. I believe the idea here is not to have a different generation, just update the current generation. Run the same games, just at different graphical fidelity. That is how I envision it.

They haven't given any details. Everything is speculation right now.

My question is how many "updates" until you've made what would equal a generational leap in the current console cycle and how is that communicated to consumers?

Yeah, that is the whole point of consoles. I mean hell, MS won't even let you upgrade the hard drives in the XBox.

Obviously they have to do it right but I just see them cutting the generation in half with a refresh. It could be similar to how apple does the 4, 4s, 5,etc ...

This isn't a big deal for most of us, but I'm curious how this plays out in the living rooms of your average consumer.

There will be growing pains for sure. It will likely turn off some consumers, especially parents looking to buy a system. They are not going to want to tinker with juniors game system to get the games to run optimally or listen to him whine about upgrades every year. They will just buy a Nintendo or PS.

I don't get why people keep saying this. The developer can do this for you. They do it already.

On different systems but are they going to sell different versions for the same system. They dont do this on PC right?

If they treat it like a console, which to me is the point, then they will. They can also build in some options like some games do. You just sell the same game that runs at different specs on different versions. That's what they do on ps4/Xbox one often times anyway.

Maybe the devs will figure out key mapping and we won't have shitty ports anymore.

Alternatively, they might start offering a couple of different builds of the XBox at low and high price points. An APU system vs. something with a dedicated GPU. Although that complicates the development process immensely. If you keep settings locked down on XBox, someone still has to determine the right settings that A) provide good performance on both systems, and B) Show a difference in quality between the low and high end XBox that the console masses can see clearly. The latter being the most difficult to do.

A mid-cycle refresh kind of presents the same problem. How do you sell the refresh in terms of markedly improved visuals?
