re: Microsoft to unify PC and Xbox One platforms

It's a very good thing as long as it's executed properly. Could spell the end of Sony in the console market and would bridge the gap between consoles and PCs. More frequent refreshes, better hardware, expanded digital licenses, cross-platform multiplayer, enhanced backwards compatibility, open development...all good stuff that would advance gaming.

Gardoki and I went back and forth on this yesterday before the story posted.

There is a common idea to all these three, seemingly isolated incidents- Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all seem to be looking at ending the age old concept of discrete hardware cycles for their consoles and handhelds. Instead, it seems like all three may be looking at establishing a common hardware platform going forward, available in a variety of configurations, that can then be iterated upon and improved with future revisions and upgrades. In a sense, the way they are looking at hardware in the future is a shared platform or infrastructure, with inter- and intra-generational compatibility.

I'm still curious if Sony will go to Steam for a deal now as a counter. They won't sit still, and there is some background there with Portal 2.

The rumor is Microsoft has something in the works. Not sure if it means anything at all but this was posted on Reddit not long ago:
xbox.steampowered.com is continually being updated

A lot of rumors think that will work like uplay does through steam

This could be awesome but I wonder how you communicate this upgradeable console model to regular Joe consumer. One of the benefits shared by both Apple and consoles in general, is hardware consistency.
For example, Joe played Quantum Break on his Xbox One and loved it back in 2016. Now it's 2018 and he decides to pick up Quantum Break 2. Oops. Joe didn't buy the 32x upgrade for his Xbox One, so it won't run. He should have read the system requirements.
This isn't a big deal for most of us, but I'm curious how this plays out in the living rooms of your average consumer.

Perhaps it will play out a lot like with PC games: you can play this game, but without the upgrade, you'll have to set everything to low.

I don't think they will split the market like that. I think a refresh console would just run the games better.

Someone tell me how this affects Battlefield.

quote:No doubt, but that's an oversimplification. If I'm developing a game I now have to make sure it runs on the various hardware configurations of not only the PC but also the Xbox One. You could have an area with 30 enemies that runs fine on the New Xbox One™ but chugs on the original system, even with the graphics set to "low." So do you dumb down the AI? Do you reduce the number of enemies? Maybe you make the world geometry of that area even more simple? Now apply that exercise to a game the size of Fallout or GTA.
I think a refresh console would just run the games better.
These types of considerations are typical for PC games but new for consoles where a developer could make certain assumptions. I'm not saying it's impossible for Microsoft to solve or mitigate this problem, but I'm curious how they will if the console really does become upgradeable.

It's more work but I'm not sure how much work. If a game runs at 900p 30fps on Xbox one then maybe it runs at 1080p 60fps on the refresh. That is oversimplified but also not completely remaking the game or anything. They already do it for different platforms. In theory it needs to run on all the systems. This isn't that different from what IOS developers have to do now.

You'll have to play it on your phone now.

When will everything just be streamed? I'm tired of devices.
Posted on 3/2/16 at 9:31 am to gamemc
Sony is trying that now with PS now and it isn't going very well. Internet in this country isn't currently good enough for this idea to take off yet.

Who cares how consololololers feel? They're the reason gaming hasn't progressed much in the last 5 years or so.
Posted on 3/2/16 at 9:37 am to Mr Gardoki
I guess more than streaming capability, I just hope someday we can break that barrier of platform exclusivity. You really don't see it with any other media.
