I received an email this morning from a representative of WYES in New Orleans.

It looks like the overzealous enforcement of a long outdated set of beer regulations by Troy Hebert and the ATC has forced the oldest beer event in Louisiana to shutdown.

Sad day for Louisiana beer drinkers...

Sad day for one of the best ways to have a fundraiser too.

What does this mean for all of the other great festivals?

That's what I'm wondering... Zapp's, Brew At The Zoo... I hope they can keep going.

Murphy wasn't the easiest guy to get along with at times, but at least he had a history in law enforcement and government regulations.

He left the non-profit events alone and wasn't concerned in the least with homebrewers as long as we weren't out there trying to directly sell our beer for money.

Unfortunately MP wasn't a "yes man" and was run out of office when he didn't do the governors bidding and ignore the 3 tier system for liquor licensing of Champions Square

Dear WYES Beer Event Participants,

As we start a New Year, we are thankful for all who have contributed to the success of WYES. We especially appreciate your interest and participation that made the WYES International Beer Tasting and Private Beer Sampling some of the most anticipated events of the year.

It is because of your generous support that for over 30 years, WYES has produced the WYES International Beer Tasting and, for over five years, the WYES Private Beer Sampling. We have enjoyed working with you and your organization on the largest and oldest annual beer event in the state of Louisiana which also spotlighted the craft beer movement in our state.

As we plan for this New Year, we regret to announce that WYES will discontinue the beer events beginning in 2015. The increased costs of these events coupled with new ATC regulations make it prohibitive to host a quality event for our community which benefits the station.

We thank you again for your generous support, hard work and exemplary loyalty to WYES and look forward to creating other opportunities to work together again.

It's not really new regulations as much as fricked in the head nonsensical interpretations of existing statutes.

What has changed that now makes this festival impossible to put on?

I suspect it is that festivals need to buy the beer they will serve (instead of having it donated). But that should be easy to deal with as you can cover your costs via sponsorships and admission fees. Sure you may not make as much money, but you can still put the event on. Unless there is some new rule or regulation which says no more beer tastings, I am not buying the party line here.

This would effectively eliminate all the homebrew clubs. And you're probably right in your suspicion.

Yeah, this sucks if the new way of reading the rules is going to stop the homebrewers at festivals like this.

I imagine all of the new beer events are eating away at the WYES attendance as well.
Fck that sorry corporate for profit event at Champions Square. I partly blame them. LOL
