Man... you gonna spend that much there are better things to be had than a pellet smoker.

Backwoods smoker is a good one if you want basically a set and forget type deal.
If you don't mind a little work, you can look into The Good One line. I have the open Range model and it cooks its arse off.
OpenRange

Look on Amazingribs.
Tons of reviews on pits from webers to several thousand dollar yoder offsets.

Get the plate with the door and it will do anything you wish with ease.

I have owned every type of grill and smoker on the market and will never use anything else again.

Basically you have everything from a pizza oven to a flame grill in one unit. There is nothing on the market as simple to use.

Traeger is the Big Green Egg of pellet grills. Most people know them the best.

The Memphis ones are real nice because they are 304 stainless steel.

Traegers are defiantly the best well known due to their mass production and marketing these days as well as being the original, I would not consider one of the new ones as production was moved to China a few years ago with the inevitable result.

I've had a Traeger for almost a year now. Use it 3-4 a week so I definitely recommend a pellet smoker but not Traeger. The hopper box design pisses me off. The inside of the box flattens out around the auger so it sucks a hole in the pellets and your fire goes out. I made a tube to put on top of my auger for long smokes. I recently put together a LA grill and the hopper was designed correctly. Can't believe Traeger hasn't fixed this problem. Their pellets are not the best either

I'm going to pull the trigger on a Yoder ys480 before football.season. I've thought about it and I don't need the larger sized one because I'm never doing competitions or huge cooks. 99% family cooks with maybe twice a year extended family holiday cooks. Plenty of room in the 480 and it takes up a smaller footprint.

I'm like what I see about the new Traeger Timberline grill.
Louisiana Grills makes a nice pellet grill that you can add a cold smoker chamber to. They also have a grill that has a lot of space for smoking. LINK
There's one pellet grill out there now that has a searing area for direct cooking. Can't remember the brand though

Have you cooked with that Louisiana pellet smoker or know anyone who has? I see they have it at Costco for what seems like a decent price (1500 i think).

Got any first or second hand knowledge about it?

I have a RecTec mini and a Traeger Timberline 850. The Rec Tec holds temperature very nicely and is portable, although it has a small cook space. I have only done a few cooks on the Timberline, but I am very pleased. Temperatures stayed within 3 degrees of set cooking temperature and it is easy to use. It is a real upgrade over other Traeger models I have seen.

I have the larger RecTec and love it. Customer service is top notch also. I got mine delivered on the weekend and was having a connection problem (user error) and called the numbers they had on the card figuring to get the runaround on the weekend. It was one of the owner's cell phone. He spent about 45 minutes walking me through the setup and making sure it worked for the initial burn. They made a fan out of me pretty quickly.

No, I haven't personally but I did some grilling at a trade show a couple of months ago and the LG rep was cooking on LG grills next to me. Looked like nice grills and were well made. I saw the cold smoker box in action. Pretty cool!
