"Our study confirmed that in an environment of loud noise, our sense of taste is compromised," said Robin Dando, assistant professor of food science at Cornell in a release. "Interestingly, this was specific to sweet and umami tastes, with sweet taste inhibited and umami taste significantly enhanced."

The only time I drink tomato juice is on a plane. Interesting.

I never liked the ones on planes, so I stopped drinking them.

Every couple of years this study/report comes out. Few years ago there was a really interesting seminar at Tales of the Cocktail about the history of air travel through cocktails. Irish coffee being one of the most important links between the two. See also, why airline food is so bad.

Anyway these two brand reps were talking about just how hard it is to serve a good drink in a pressurized cabin at 35,000 feet.

Further rambling: one of the best bars in the country, and certainly for any airport, is One Flew South in ATL, Terminal E.

Never had one on a plane but the ones at Canal Bank are pretty hard to beat while on the water.

Every now and then someone also writes about how many people order ginger ale on planes, but never drink it otherwise.

Here is one. LINK

I order ginger ale because I have already had my daily allotment of caffeine by then.

I really, really want to like Bloody Marys because they seem extremely refreshing for brunch and socially acceptable

I guess I'll stick with a screwdriver.

United's bloodies are ratherdisgusting. Whatever canned stuff they use is pretty nasty. I'll have one at the airport before boarding, but onboard I just can't drink theirs anymore.
