Yeah next month we are doing a group outing. Second half of June. Haven't come up with the official date yet.

We were thinking Lock and Key for our first event. They probably have the best selection in town.

Plus Arthur (the owner) is one of the first people to introduce me to this awesome world of bourbon. Before going there I thought Makers Mark was the pinnacle of bourbon. So have always wanted to say thank you in a neat way to him and his expertise.

Liquor guys. I pretty much only drink beer and the lady drinks mostly beer, wine and the occasional vodka. Two questions.

Can you recommend a good crowd-pleasing whiskey/bourbon/scotch in the $30-40 range just to have on hand for guests? I originally thought a decent scotch would be good, but then I thought maybe bourbon or whiskey because of the versatility and someone could mix it with coke or something if they really wanted to (heaven forbid). I used to have an old bottle of crown from years ago, but it finally got polished off recently. Ideally, I'd like to move up from crown, but it did serve its purpose as a "crowd-pleaser." Also, let me know if $30-40 is out of touch with reality. I'm not looking to knock anybody's socks off, but I can also afford a decent bottle of something for the guests.

Second question... I kept the old crown in a glass decanter that a friend gave me a few years ago. The liquor shouldn't go bad in there, should it? I would like to keep this new bottle in the decanter because it looks nice and helps me save some space. Will it be fine if it sits in there literally for years?

You can get 2 bottles of Buffalo Trace for around $40. Perfect for a "guest whiskey".

My suggestions with rough price:
Four Roses Single Barrel - $40
Elijah Craig 12 - $28
Russell's Reserve 10 - $30
Eagle Rare - $30
Buffalo Trace - $25

Plenty more but those are all pretty easy to find

Absolutely not. There are a lot of good poors in that range. When I started getting into this, someone posted these links to BreakingBourbon.com for their best $20-30 bottles and $40-50 bottles.

Best $20-30
Best $30-40

Now, those prices are based on the suggested retail....many retailers are marking up the prices nowadays due to demand. The Wellers are good poors as are the 4 Roses bottles. I've been probably most pleasantly surprised by the Elijah Craig 12. Not too high in demand (IMO) compared with the Wellers and easily found.

BT would be a solid choice. You can do Bulleit, that's the same price point around $20/$25. You could also do Knob Creek, that's a solid bourbon under $30. Eagle Rare is also a $30 bourbon and that might be my favorite at that price. Forr $40, you might check out Michter's Bourbon, this is another of my favorites.

But if you are thinking your guests are just going to mix with coke or another mixer, Buffalo Trace and Bulleit are perfect for that.

I would definitely agree with this. Maybe get a few bottles, one for mixing with sodas while another for straight pours or cocktails.

I gave you one of those likes. I wish this was going on when I still lived in BR though.
