What are everyone’s thoughts on Johnny Sanchez?

Going to check it out for the first time this weekend, I am a big fan of all the John Besh establishments, and some of the menu items look great.
Did a quick search on here and most of the comments said over priced and not worth the wait, is this the general consensus?
TIA

On a NOLA restaurant? Please.
It is mexican, so even at its best it is mexican.

It is pretty good, but I don't find it to be anything special.

I like the place. Wouldn't be on top of my list if I was a visitor. It's worth checking out if you are already in that area for something.

I've been several times. The food is good to very good. The prices for entrees can run a little high, but you pay for quality.
I went a week ago and had a great meal, but the service was atrocious. I discussed our issues with the manager and he gave me his card to comp my next meal. I thouht it was a nice gesture.

I loved the salsa and mole enchiladas.

I liked it. We had the crawfish enchilada special, carne asada tacos and Mexican street corn.
It's definitely more expensive than any other Mexican spot you'll hit in NOLA, with smaller portions, but the food was good.
I would probably return for the happy hour menu.

I agree with this. The prices seem to be mostly a function on how you order.
Having a purely a la carte menu in this type of place is sort of odd, I think. I get wanting to differentiate yourself from the typical mexican slop house, but come on.

We found it to be good but not great.

Well don't order the tacos, more or less. 1 or 2 are good, but most are shite.
Go bigger plates. That's where the place shines.
Full disclosure, I call the place Johnny Ballsack. You could do much better. I'd only hit it if I were a person that visited frequently and I were running out of places to visit. And even then I'd hit one of the much better places that is more indicative of the city's cuisine.

It's the fourth best upper end latin place in the city.

You laugh, but I'm no question going Mizado over Johnny. Also definitely going Maya's. None of those are "authentic."
Mizado is hands down the best of all of those listed.

All three have better meals and drinks. Mayas may be as bad as Sanchez but Mais and Mizado are leagues better.
But emoticon away.
I've given Johnny's two chances and was disappointed each time.

Went there last night for the first time and wanted to leave a quick review.
Got there around 8:45 looking for somewhere in the area that might be lively at this time. Only 3 tables in the restaurant, but It was late on a Tuesday night so we didn't expect much.
Service was on point through the entire meal, but a little rushed. They did not close until 10, but we felt like the server was rushing us from the get go.
Started with some house margaritas. $9 a pop and nothing special.
Chips and salsa came over. Salsa was mediocre. Reminded me of Velvet Cactus salsa if you are familiar with it.
Chips were a mixture of tortilla and burnt plantains. We also ordered the quacamole for $8 which was a decent portion but just ok.
For our entrees we ordered the pork belly tacos, fish tacos and barbacoa tacos. 2 tacos per oder around $12. Very small tacos, but that seems to be what everyone is doing these days. All of the tacos were very good and full of meat. Pork belly with pineapple glaze was the highlight. Really great taco.
We also had the charro beans and rice as side dishes. I honestly think we should have sent both sides back. They had no taste whatsoever, did not look very appealing and were served lukewarm. Was very surprised at how under seasoned they were. We could not eat more than a bite of either option.
Total bill for quac, 2 drinks, 3 orders of tacos and 2 sides was $80 plus tip. Probably won't be going back. I agree with the above poster that said Mizado was leagues better than JS.
