Wait, which is it: Nick's food was over complicated or it wasn't original enough? Seems contradictory.

It was both. Forcing scallops into a noodle? Its both unoriginal (Wiley Dufresne and other been doing it for years) and overcomplicated, just cook a scallop.

Again I didnt eat the food, but judging by judges reactions 3 judges were on team Nina and 2 pushed hard for Nick.

PS know what was original? Serving a bread course with a crispy piece of breadfruit and foie gras butter.

I've neither ever heard that Wiley did that, nor do I think scallops are interesting in and of themselves. In my limited perspective, I gave him props for that one.

Eh, I don't put a whole lot of stock into their produced/edited "opinions."

Agreed.

Her dessert looked pretty unappealing though.

I didn't care for Nina at all. Or Shirley. Nick was my pick as soon as Justin was voted off.

This. And...

I didn't care who won, but I thought Nina had the better sounding and more creative meal. I wanted that bread course. I could almost taste the curry salt on top.

I didn't think her dessert looked so small, but it obviously cost her.

Saw a few minutes of the after show. Nina was all made up with some real bright blue eyeshadow. It wasn't complimentary.

Don't know that I'll watch the show again.

Bump for Late to the party.

I was really suprprised Nick won.

I agree it appeared 3-2 at the judges table.

As to unoriginal. Plenty of that to go around.

Tuna tartare
Duck Breast

I wanted Nick to win, but I thought Nina deserved to win. Nick's delicate hand on seasoning would probably piss me off.

The biggest thing to me was the pasta dish appeared to be the biggest hit, far and away.

I assumed that was enough to win the contest, in spite of the mediocre dessert.

I'd imagine when the judge's say "This is the closest finale we've ever had" it wasnt because both meals were so amazing. Rather it was because both meals had high points and low points.

Unoriginal is fine. I'd eat roast chicken all day or any classics from any cuisine, Nick's food is very copycat.

Nina's while not wholly original, at least has an intriguing island twist.

All in all, a decent season.

According to Tom on the aftershow, Nick clearly won the last two challenges in Hawaii. On the last challenege he said he clearly won that one also. He said he peaked at the right time. He also said that he squeaked by a few times throughout the season while Nina was consistently near the top but they had to judge on the last challenge only.

It looked like to me Padma and Emerill did not want Nick to win while the other judges did. Hard to tell from editing though.

Not sure if serious.

I think Nick improved the most throughout the season, but he also never got his seasonings correct.

I think this error is the most glaring.

That's my bad.

I usually don't make that bad of mistakes spelling. I am working with numbers right now though.

Seems to me if someone had been told all season his food lacked salt and then he served up a crudo that didnt have enough salt, that would be grounds to kick a cook out of any of those chef's kitchens.

Its a very simple concept. A touch of sea salt over the cut fish. This isnt rocket science.

Yeah, I was shocked he STILL under-seasoned on the last challenge, even after he said that was one thing he couldn't do. If he hadn't have made that mistake, I'd be arguing that he for sure deserved to win, but when it seems like every challenge ends with the same mistake, I'm reluctant to argue he definitely deserved the title.

Though Nina did awesome throughout the whole season, I'm generally ok with the idea of letting the best at the end win. Nick seemed to progress and grow -- he already had the knowledge and technical skills, but he learned something. Nina seemed more like she's gonna keep doing what she already does, despite there surely being at least some room to learn or improve.

But what about that dude for Nick who made the pasta? I didn't even remember him, hahah and Nick picked him first!

He was one of the first eliminated and by all appearances was a complete douche. I thought Nick mentioned that he worked with that guy in the past?
