I had a feeling a few people would end up complaining about its authenticity
It's contrived? Well no shite. Every episode in the history of top chef has been. They have to plan stuff out. They can't just pop up on Jackson avenue on Fat Tuesday & have a spontaneous soul food cookoff while Zulu is rolling by.
It's not a small crew like when Bourdain visited and everyone was sucking his balls about the hole in the walls he visited.
Top chef is a large production. It has to be contrived. If it means throwing a fake party on the side of the bayou, or not even shopping at the whole food in New Orleans, or playing the Katrina card, then so be it. There are some limitations here, and a ton of planning.
