There's several threads on San Fran so do a search and see what folks said.

Alcatraz is worth the time, a must do IMO. The Italian section of town and little China both have some really good authentic restaurants. The wharf area is too touristy but near Alcatraz if you want to check it out. It's a great city.

Check out the Ferry Building Marketplace. There are some good restaurants for lunch and dinner in there and a cool place to look around.

I can't imagine doing a tour, ever.

What's wrong with doing a tour?

Nothing, I just don't want to do one. I've traveled all over and it never, ever strikes me as something that I want. No big deal, I don't heckle tours as they go by. Choose your own adventure...

Not a thing. Especially if it's your first time visiting a place.

This has nothing to do with food or drink. But....the Giants play their last two home games against the Dodgers in the beginning of Oct. Unfortunately the real Bay Area team finishes their season away.

Alcatraz is absolutely worth it, as another guy said ferry building is a great spot for breakfast or light lunch.

Sens is a great spot for happy hour during the week that's right across from the ferry building.

San Fran is awesome, just enjoy the weather while you're there.

There are plenty of places in the world where admission is only allowed as a part of a tour...including Alcatraz. So categorically avoiding tours means you can't see lots of things. The night tours of Alcatraz are especially atmospheric.

Alcatraz is amazing, Coit Tower is worth a trip too. So many places in and around. Must go see the Redwoods

Penang Garden on Washington with their Spicy Crab was simply one of the best meals I've had all time

If you want to take a tour of the Anchor Brewery, make your reservation now. I tried several times to schedule a tour and they were booked up months in advance. (Happy ending: I met one of their brewers at a private party while telling my sob story about not getting in -- I even showed up one day and said "I'm small, I'll stand in the back and won't ask any questions" and they still turned me away -- and he wound up giving a friend and I a private tour.)

5 days? Nice....check out a Giants game if you can, as was said earlier. Check out Haight/Ashbury one day....go walk around Dolores Park in the Castro one day. There will be kids with nitrous tanks that will give you a hit or two off it if you give them a beer. You could spend an entire day in Golden Gate Park. Bring some unsalted peanuts with you to feed the squirrels. It's really amusing. Tour around the bars. It should be warm in October....they have the late onset summer that most west coast cities get. Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge....Alcatraz is cool, but I never did it despite living nearby for 30 years. If you want to do something cheesy, eat at the Taco Bell on the beach in Pacifica....eh...I guess I would't recommend it if you're just visiting. Muir Woods across the GG Bridge are very cool. Food is so plentiful and great....just walk around or yelp search it. I would definitely recommend Asian food at least once. You can go Japanese, Chinese, Thai, or Vietnamese.....

Wow I didn't know you could get nitrous hits. Might need to check out the park closer next time.

SF is truly a great city. You can have tons of fun just walking around or riding the subway through different neighborhoods.

One of things I had to do was eat at an authentic Chinese place in Chinatown. Got some good recs and was one of maybe 4 white people in the restaurant, so that's a great sign.

Whole menu was in Chinese. Told the waitress to bring whatever the hell she wanted and thought was good

Some of the best food I've ever eaten, but good god it was spicy. I didn't shite right for a week. Lol

Don't trip over the multitude of bums sleeping all over the place. Do the tea gardens in Golden Gate park. Do Alcatraz. Five days seems like a long time to do San Fran. Venture across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito for a day.
