Prime porterhouse and a petite sirah is on deck for this upcoming V-Day.

Screw putting up with the V-Day crowds at restaurants.

It means the restaurants have a month to prepare, should be fine.

This is CLUTCH information. I will definitely be doing this if true.

can a popular restaurant fit more people during VDay than on a normal busy weekend?

Unless it is a special event, you can get into Ruffino's, Ruth's, etc. on a Friday/Saturday night without a reservation because they are not 100% booked 100% of the night. The places in town with big wait times are places I imagine people aren't looking to go for Valentine's Day (Sammy's, Chimes, etc.).

Old roommate has worked for Ruth's for years. Valentine's night/weekend much different for them than a regular weekend night. Their books are full from open until well after close because those that couldn't get the good times settle for times when you normally wouldn't have a crowd. She wouldn't have dreaded Valentine's, Mother's Day, etc. if it was the same as any night...

Many higher end restaurants do fixed menus for Valentine's as well, so you don't even get the normal experience.

what's the difference to you, of making a reservation and eating at, say, Peche on a normal Saturday night, because you know it books up fast, as opposed to making a reservation there and eating there on Valentines day? just curious if you shy away because its "madness!!!"

I guess I should clarify that I am talking about Baton Rouge specifically. The "special occasion" restaurants in BR are rarely madness. When they are, it is for a holiday or special event.. not an average Saturday night. I make reservations on OpenTable on my way to restaurants all the time here.

New Orleans in entirely different since they have legit tourism, chefs that actually win awards and are known to others, etc.

That said, I actually did eat in a nicer restaurant in NOLA without a reservation last year on Valentine's Day (not FOR Valentine's Day) because the day fell on Endymion and it was dinner time and I don't live there. Place was not packed at all since people care more about Mardi Gras.

i'm one of those people who greatly prefers a weeknight dinner to a busy saturday night, especially at very popular places. i like more relaxed, leisurely pacing, quieter dining rooms, and I prefer to avoid the loud-talking and/or semi-drunk large tables that seem to plague so many weekend evening dining rooms. i freely admit to sliding down the slippery slope into grumpy middle age.
