In a recent thread, I mentioned that I had more fresh basil than I knew what to do with. Some mentioned making pesto and freezing it. I had no idea that buying pine nuts would be so difficult.

At my first grocer, I was sent to a few different aisles, including baking, international, snacks too. Nothing doing. I drove to World Market, thinking they surely must carry them. Myself and a few bewildered clerks (not bashing because I love WM) came up empty handed. I made my way to Rouses and after a few aisles checks found a 1.75oz for six bucks.

Are they usually this expensive? Where would you recommend purchasing them from?

Yes they are usually expensive. Try shelling pine cones yourself. it's not easy.

Whole foods might have them in the bulk section. Probably around 20 bucks a pound though.

They are usually much more expensive if you buy them in small packs, but if that's all you can find, I guess it will have to do.

Do you have a Trader Joe's near you? I got some at the one in BR yesterday--8 oz for $5.99, which is more than enough to do pesto.

Costco/Sam's have much larger bags, but I think they're like $15-$20.

FWIW, you can use walnuts in pesto also...it tastes slightly different, but it's still good.

ETA: The ones nateslu1 posted from Amazon are what they have at the Trader Joe's near me, along with a dry roasted variety. (I think I've used both at different times but I prefer the roasted ones.) That's ridiculous that Amazon is charging almost twice the price as the stores.

Substitute pecans for a more local flavor or walnuts for a more cost effective option. Otherwise, Sam's sells a big bag that offers a slight monetary advantage on price.

Walnuts work fine and I even used raw cashews last week, tho they are expensive too

Evidently sunflower seeds work too

Best price is at Costco or a middle eastern market.

I don't toast mine. I like the bite that they have raw. Sams occasionally has large packs but Albertsons has them and they are not to expensive. I mean you aren't using tons of them.

And in addition to the nuts others posted I make pistachio pesto a lot and add sun dried tomatoes.

Yep! Costco or Sam's. I used to put them in the Milanese sauce I made for St.Joseph Day feeding.

Our Kroger has the little packs on the baking aisle (or isle as half the world now types), along with small packs of walnuts and other nuts. They also have a larger container, but not much cheaper per ounce, in the crunchy/hippy/organic aisle.

Once you open them, use or freeze. They will go rancid pretty quick.

I've never had a problem finding them. I've even found good priced bags in the Mexican spice sections of stores. Walnuts will be fine as mentioned.

Try to find a Middle Eastern market. I've gotten them at Mona's in Mid City NO for much cheaper than any regular grocery.

I'll occasionally find the Alessi brand in the pasta isle (pignoli nuts). I like mine toasted but as others have said don't be afraid to try other nuts.

Trader Joe's

I didn't think they had any, so I went to Sprouts and bought 'em loose. Think it was $19.99 a pound. I only needed like 1/3 for pesto. I went to TJs later that day and sure enough they have them in half-pound bags for $5.99
