Will be heading to the Big Apple this weekend with the wife & kids and will be staying in Time Square. It's been about 15 years since we've been. Anyone have some first hand recs?

John's Pizzaria. My wife worked at E&Y in Times Square for years. Every time we go back for a visit, we eat at Johns.

Was just there a few weeks ago. Had to stay around Times Square for a conference.

Rundown of places to eat near Times Square:

X'ian Famous Foods - awesome counter service with fantastic spicy lamb noodle dish.

Bouchon Bakery: In Rockefeller Center.

Further afield:

Gramercy Tavern
Eataly - I like to eat in the pizza/pasta section, good place to grab a quickish bite.
The Dutch- Awesome fried chicken on Mondays.
Balthazar - French brasserie, great space

Best advice you will get.

Walk a few blocks away and there are great choices. The rents in times square making running a profitable restaurant impossible so only chains really operate in that area and they do so just to have a location in that area.

There are a few exceptions, but the square is mainly a tourist trap.

I'll say get out of times square to eat. visit a few burroughs.

I'll say that Juliana's Pizza in Brooklyn comes highly, highly rec'd by the locals. It's run/owned by the original Grimaldi family, who sold their business and opened up Juliana's. LINK

I have a list somewhere that i need to find that i'll post up later.

You could walk over to 9th Ave and hit up 5 Napkin Burger or Arriba, Arriba.

NYC is not very big compared to how most people picture it. There is no reason to eat in the tourist trap that is Times Square. Walk a few blocks and you can find much better food. Better yet, take the subway to another borough and you can eat even better. I would do some research and find what place in NYC I want to eat and make it work, even if it means loading the family up on the subway. Are you trying to avoid subways and taxis? Subway is cheap and your family wont get killed.

TGI Fridays is the only answer.

How old are the kids? Is it their first time to NYC?

A good casual rec would be Chai Thai Kitchen on 8th & 55th. Super casual and great prices/portions. It was my first taste of Thai food and really enjoyed it.

Agree with everyone on avoiding most Times Square restaurants in regards to food.

Carmine's serves family style Italian. My family dined there past few trips and always had a great time.

Leave Times Square. It is the only area of NYC that sucks.

Went to John's pizza a little over a month ago. It was outstanding! Best pizza I have ever eaten. Cool setting too.

I did go to the Dave and Busters when I was in NYC but we didn't eat, just had a blast playing the games. I know I was in NYC and could have been doing a thousand different things but for me that was fun and something I can't do at home.
