has FAO already closed down? If not swing by there for sure and walk through central park grabbing vendor food (and go in the plaza)

Had John's once. It was inside a renovated church. Cool place and some of the best pizza I've had

It has.

I wouldn't eat in Time Square. Walk over to 9th for some good Hells Kitchen places.
Go down to West village, East Village, just about anywhere other than Time Square.

Staying there because the majority of the trip will be spent seeing shows on Broadway. If that makes me a schmuck then a schmuck I must be.

There is a massive subway right there. You can be at points south or north in literally 4 minutes. Even just 4 blocks to the east will get you away from the madness.

We are game to go pretty much anywhere, but wanted to see if there is anything we shouldn't miss in the general vicinity

Carmine's is a fine option for dinner and a show with two younger kids.

John's on Bleecker is very good pizza and I understand they own the one in Times Square, too. If that's the case I would highly recommend it.

I agree with the recommendations for John's Pizza on 44th St. just off Times Square. I like thin crust New York pizza baked in brick ovens and this is one of the best versions of it. The restaurant is an old church building that still looks like a church with stained glass and a curving staircase that leads to the balcony. We eat there at least once every time we go to N.Y.

This one has made the list. Balthazar looks pretty damn good as well. Maybe not for the kids, but I'm sure they can accommodate

For what it is worth, took 3 year old daughter to Balthazar and she loved it. Granted she just ate french fries, bread, and ice cream and watched a show on an iPhone, but I could tell she was into it.
