Visited a friend there last month, ate at Meat and Potatoes (you need a reservation and they are apparantly hard to get) but the food was really good. Prices were really reasonable for what we ate. Ate lunch at Fatheads, really really large sandwiches and they brew their own beer. Ate lunch at Gaucho for Argentinian food. There is a Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh with a really large beer garden. Butcher and Rye (we has reservations for this one also) was really good, but I was pretty drunk and missed some of the finer points of dinner.

Everything we ate was really good, FYI- they are big beer fans and like to put eggs on most sandwiches.

Let me know if you have more questions...

Pitt friend says Primanti is overrated and we had Iron City beer and it was really bad. There are a number of good small breweries I can point you in the direction if you need them

ETA: Fat Heads is one of those breweries...

Go Here

Eat German Sausage foods, drink lots of beer.

Take a cab so you don't have to drive back home. If you see my son, tell him I said hello. - He lives at the top of the hill.

Here they are

go here

Good German Beer and good angry German Sausages.

Primanti Bros is the worst meal I've ever had in my life and the three people I was with echo the same sentiment.

Maybe we caught them on a bad day but it was borderline inedible.

I just started my masters at Carnegie Mellon. Moved here about a month ago.

The best food I've had here is Asian:

Grit and Grace is like an Asian/American fusion downtown which is an amazing meal. Even if you don't like Asian food it's really got a great American twist. Kind of expensive. Really good cocktails.

Noodlehead in Shadyside is my favorite place though. Best Thai food I've ever had. Only place to get a decent iced tea. Every dish is great, but the sweet bun appetizer is the best thing there. Relatively cheap. 6$ -9$ for dishes.

I ate at Monterey Bay Fish Grotto. LINK The food was good, and I really enjoyed the ambiance.

In the strip district I love Penn Ave Fish Company and Thin Man sandwiches. Fat Heads is great to drink at, the amount of food they give you is huge but average. Get drunk on their IPA Head Hunter before you order food there. Meat and Potatoes is a good spot to eat and drink. I used to go to Caliente Pizza in the italian section of town a bunch to drink. The pizza was ok but the tap list was great.

Primantis is terrible. I ate there three different times trying completely different stuff each time and never liked it. Eat there once to say you did and move along.
