Nasa engineers have helped to create a knife that will almost never have to sharpened.

quote:

KNASA CHEF KNIFE

- Made from an ultra-hard alloy that is twice as strong as titanium

- Cutting edge has a 25 degree angle (12.5 degrees each side), making it thin and precise

- Nana-serrations in the blade become self-sharpening through use as new teeth become exposed

- Knife edge is harder than any steel, yet isn't brittle and doesn't rust

- The knife will retail at under $100 and should be on the market in May

quote:

The cutting-edge 'KNasa Chef Knife' is twice as sharp as other blades and stays sharp for five times longer.

The brains behind it claim it is the first true innovation in knife making in over 200 years.

MR = MC

Old school economics tell me that sales will likely not cover the cost of these...however many $billions we have spent on the fricking "space program".

Oh, and also velcro...that probably is a valid result of space program.

Ever heard of the term "spinoff"? And I don't mean TV shows.

I forgot how much money NASA spent on developing a pen that would write in space.

The Russians brought pencils.

Yes, may or later. And if you look at the kickstarter you will note that NASA appears to have had nothing to do with this product.

The guy supposedly uses an "alloy developed by NASA" but that could be any number of materials. NASA isn't in the business of making knives. And he doesn't even name the magic alloy

Common urban myth. Fisher developed the Space pen independently.
I'm a fan of the pens and have a few different kinds. I like that they always write, no matter the angle.
quote:

A common urban legend states that, faced with the fact that ball-point pens would not write in zero-gravity, NASA spent a large amount of money to develop a pen that would write in the conditions experienced during spaceflight (the result purportedly being the Fisher Space Pen), while the Soviet Union took the simpler and cheaper route of just using pencils. The Fisher Space Pen was actually developed independently and privately in the 1960s, NASA later purchasing 400 of the pens at $6 each. The Soviets followed as well

An alloy developed at Caltech and 'tested' by NASA...which means they reviewed test results provided to them by either Caltech or a testing company like SwRI. I doubt that NASA performed hardness tests or fracture toughness tests on this material.

How does Habitat get to link this knife to NASA? Apparently, judging from the (albe'em uninformed) replies here, NASA doesn't have a good reputation anyway.

WNBI

Global is the best bang for your buck in my opinion & I've owned and worked professionally with Henkel's, Wustoff's, etc. theyre well balanced and are a one-piece design.

I have a Shun that was gift and that thing is badass but i would never pay the money for that.

I found that Globals seem to keep a better edge over time. especially if you take care of them. No dishwasher. Always hand wash. Dry well. and run it over a honing steel 4-6 times before every use. knife will last you 20 years or so.

Japanese know what time it is when it comes to making a fine blade.

That story is false. The Space Pen was developed by an independent company. NASA just bought some.

One was used to allow astronauts to take off from the moon after a switch in the Lunar Module broke. The pen was inserted into the hole where the broken switch was and the metal body allowed the contacts to make a circuit. It saved the lives of 2 men.

I'd say they were a bargain.
