Have you tried the weber cubes?

They are like 3-4 bucks a box

I'm not familiar with the sawdust ones y'all are talking about

I use Royal Oak in my Weber kettle, but it's the only one I've tried. Seems to leave a lot of coals big enough to re-use... but maybe that's common with all lump.

I'm doing this currently but at $8-10 a box I'm blowing through a box every few weeks. If the Looftlighter works I'll save money and time running back and forth to buy additional boxes of parrafin cubes.

I don't use the parrafin cubes...I use a flattish square thing, made by Rutland (and many others). One single square (or two) will get your large going...a big box of 144 squares costs around $12. Sounds like you're buying an overpriced version. You can get the big, cheap box at Tractor Supply: LINK

ETA I don't like using bottled gas--it's resource-intensive overkill (to me). The small MAPP bottles aren't refillable. A weed burner attached to a refillable propane tank is another option, but again, it's an overkill solution. The compressed squares use sawdust and a minimal amount of parrafin....

If you're really, really thrifty or enviro, try soaking a cheap paper towel with used cooking oil. I did this for a while, but I kept spilling cooking oil and didn't like the rancid burning oil smell. Still, it's a low-fossil-fuel option.

The ones in the red/black box? I've used them and they work well but around here the price is typically $5-6. The other issue is that it takes at least two cubes or sometimes three to get the fire going in my Primo.

For those who use MAPP torches... Im still in shock how long that damn yellow tank lasts.. I'm going on a year of using the same tank and it gets used at least twice a week.

I just use an electric starter. I put it at the bottom of the grate and add the lump on top. It's been easy enough, but from the replies it looks like I may be in the minority.

No electrical outlet nearby....or I'd consider it.

Also, do I need to buy anything special to fire it up with?

You don't have to, but once I started using this, Propane torch , I enjoyed my egg a lot more. Don't waste the extra $10 for the one with the igniter, the igniter won't last long.

I picked up a couple bags of lump at sams recently. Not sure of the brand, but have been really pleased with the amount of big hunks vs small debris.

Bought one from Sam's online a couple years ago. Still going strong and well worth the $300. You can't go wrong with the purchase.

Almost all grocery store branded lump charcoal is royal oak. I use kroger brand and it works great.
