Lump Charcoal and Kamado Style Grills

I will be the proud owner of a new Big Green Egg on Saturday. My wife went today to purchase it but didn't buy any charcoal when she was there. Obiovusly I can buy the BGE branded stuff but don't know if it's worth it or if any brand will do? Any recommendations?
Also, do I need to buy anything special to fire it up with?

I'm pleased with royal oak, aside from the occasional rock I find in it. The little fire starters work fine for me. MAPP torch if you want a faster start.

Yep royal oak lump from wal-marks is the best
Eat: I have a benzomatic torch from Home Depot

I haven't tried many, but I haven't had any bad experiences with the stuff I've tried.
X2 on the torch. I use the blue bottles though.

Congrats on getting your egg!
Royal Oak is good, and FYI, it's the same as BGE, only in a BGE bag.
Ozark Oak is good.
Fire King is good
Wicked Good is good, and is the same as Kamado Joe brand.
Definitely get a MAPP torch for fast lighting.

Royal oak from Walmark is the best bargain by far and get a mapp torch, they're fricking awesome.

What size egg you getting? I have a large. Frontier lump from lowes seems to have giant chunks in it I have to break Down when I fill the fire box up.
Never tried the wal mart kind. Will give it a look.

Get the Looftlighter. Very fast and no flame shooting out.

I use royal oak. No complaints

Anybody have an Akorn? for $300 tough for me not to pull the trigger

Cosmo, I struggle to understand why you have not embraced the more established kamado style cookers.
You must be a tight-arse of the greatest degree. Greater than me!

If it does the same thing for 1/3 the price I dont see why not.
Should I trade in my exxxtreme cold ice chest for a Yeti? It costs 5 times more, weighs a ton but it will keep ice for 4 days instead of 3 and I get a sweet sticker for my truck.

I have not had a "bad" brand of lump. Some seems to burn a little faster than others but for the most part its all good stuff.
I usually buy mine from academy.

I have the akorn and love it
Of course it's not as good as a ceramic cooker, but it's damn good and well valued at 300
(I only paid 240 for mine at amazon warehouse deals)
I've gotten the grill up to 900 degrees and I've cooked as low as 225 for 8 hours
It's a well designed grill and does its purpose very well
CE Tiger will vouch for it also

I've had a few people mention that lighter to me. Have you been happy with it? Any problems? I'd hate to spend $75 on a lighter and be displeased with it.

I don't use a propane torch to light....I use the compressed sawdust/parrafin squares (various brands). I like to put a match to it, then go off and do prep work while it does its thing. Speed isn't everything.
Wicked Good is great for low&Slow, but it takes longer to get going. Royal Oak is my standard; you can get larger bags of it at Restaurant Depot.

The only problem with mine is the townhome I am living in temporarily doesn't have an electric outlet nearby......................so I have no place to plug it in short of stringing out extension cords.
So lately I have been using the weber paraffin cubes.

I'm doing this currently but at $8-10 a box I'm blowing through a box every few weeks. If the Looftlighter works I'll save money and time running back and forth to buy additional boxes of parrafin cubes.
