That's not really the point of the thread regardless of how wrong you are. In what world does less carbs equal losing water weight long term? Fewer carbs is fewer calories.

My wife and I did a long term change to our weekday diet that's helped us lose a good deal of weight. Lunch and dinner during the week are a meat and a veggie. On the weekends, we have maybe 2 meals between Friday night and Sunday where we splurge "responsibly." Splurge typically means that we're out to eat, don't purposely avoid the starch portion of an entrée and hope it's a sweet potato or something.

Now that we've gotten used to it, I find there's really no need for a carb laden starch on every plate. If more people cooked at home, shopped the outer ring of the grocery store, limited their starches, and desserts, our national obesity problem would be significantly reduced but I guess we'd all be thirsty.

During our two months of Whole30, my favorite new thing my wife cooked was called Egg Roll in a bowl. Had it last night as a matter of fact, and will probably go home for leftovers at lunch.

I'm guessing you would not have to be as restrictive with the ingredient. Just improvise if you don't want to buy things like the coconut oil and aminos.

Paleo "Egg Roll in a Bowl"

1 tsp. coconut oil
1 lb. ground pork
5 minced garlic cloves
1/3 cup coconut aminos
1 tsp. freshly minced ginger
1 tsp. rice wine vinegar
1 tsp. sesame oil
1 10 oz. bag coleslaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots)
sliced green onion & sesame seeds, to garnish

Melt coconut oil in a wok or large skillet over medium heat.

Add pork and cook until browned, using a wooden spoon to break up.

Combine garlic, coconut aminos, ginger, vinegar and sesame oil in a small bowl.

Add sauce and coleslaw mix to browned pork and stir. Reduce heat and cover; cook for 15 minutes or until vegetables are soft.

Garnish with green onion and sesame seeds.

Do you prefer the flavor to ground beef? I have switched to ground turkey because it is about half the price of beef thought I don't like the flavor as much.

Are you on Instagram? Start following people who have keto or low carb in their user names. You will get fantastic meal ideas as well as recipes.

Don't start playing with the low carb sweets and desserts until you've followed the diet for a while. Those really should only be for occasional treats.

Some of my favorite meals:

Crustless quiche, with any number of interesting meat and veg combos.

Steak and eggs. Steak and avocado. Steak and mashed cauliflower. Steak and asparagus. You get the idea.

Stir fry combos, using vegetables like cabbage, mushrooms, zucchini, and proteins like beef, chicken or shrimp.

Meatballs and or meat sauce over zoodles (zucchini noodles). Zucchini noodles are an awesome vehicle for the sauces you usually eat with pasta. It's not pasta, it doesn't taste like pasta, but you can have spaghetti sauce (make sure you use tomato products that have no added sugar) or Alfredo sauce or the like.

Cauliflower in a number of ways. If you buy the bags of riced cauliflower (or do it yourself), you can have mashed cauli, cauli rice, cauliflower crust pizza, cheese cauli mac (no real mac used).

I love to have bunless cheese burgers with good toppings like avocado or bacon or grilled onions. I prefer my own homemade burgers, but that's just me.

If I feel the need for fries, zucchini fries (dipped in egg, dredged in parmesan cheese and a little almond flour and then baked) are awesome.

Almond flour is a good substitute for regular flour, (Google Fathead Pizza) but should not be a daily thing. Maybe once a week.

Tacos, using shells made of cheese. AWESOME!

Nachos, using nacho chips made of cheese.

Stuffed bellpeppers, no rice in the stuffing. Usually a combo of ground beef and pork or ground beef and bulk sausage along with mushrooms and maybe cabbage, topped with cheese.

Pay attention to things that you might think you can use freely, like the trinity. The carbs add up. As much as I love onions, I am much more careful with the amount I use in cooking. Tomatoes are not carb free. I count the number of grape tomatoes I use. Broccoli is not carb free! Cauliflower is lower in carbs than broccoli, just so you know.

Wings (not breaded, no sweet sauces), baked chicken, grilled chicken, baked or grilled fish.

Fast food:
McDonald's breakfast, I order scrambled eggs and a sausage patty or bacon.

Wendy's: Bunless Baconator (I sometimes forget to say no ketchup, and then I have to scrape it off).

Hardee's menu has a couple of low carb options. A chicken club and a burger that they serve wrapped in lettuce. They also have a low carb breakfast bowl, which I have not tried.

And really, any place will give you a burger without the bun, but Wendy's and Hardee's don't question it.

I would've posted some pics, but I'm annoying enough in the WFDT threads.

ETA: Thanks, Tiger Ree!

This bothers me in that it isn't true. Fewer starches is fewer calories is a better way to put it.

Veggies are low cal and have carbs.

This I 100% agree with. I do eat a lot of starches (potatoes and sweet potatoes and such) but those are things you find on the outer ring of the grocery store and are still healthy

I wasn't trying to be scientific in rebutting what someone else said. I try to adhere the low-ish carb diet and wanted to keep the conversation going in hopes for some ideas I haven't thought of and the water weight comment was shite for this thread.

I agree with you, starches and processed foods are what we try to avoid. We actually have half a sweet potato baked served like a traditional baked potato once or twice a week. My line of thinking is that 3rd place on your plate is usually doing you more harm than good because it's potatoes, mac and cheese, pasta, or something like that and eliminating it is an easy way to significantly reduce your caloric intake.

I am a high carb person but get them from natural sources, including starches.

When I do eat low carb some of my favorites are :
Grilled chicken spinach salad (throw avocado in there sometimes)
Steak and Eggs
zucchini noodles with chicken, avocado, and cherry tomato's
Spaghetti Squash with ground beef/turkey
Steak and Brussel sprouts/green beans

I use low sodium soy sauces with the squash and noodles with sirloin or something for Asian style dish.

I've been eating ground turkey for longer than I can remember so the health benefits have surpassed the flavor.

Thanks for this recipe. Made it tonight. Only change was adding some Szechuan peppercorns. I make this addition to any dish that uses sesame oil.
