I've always used the store bought taco kits, but after eating it today, I realized I could probably do better. Anyone have tips for seasoning ground beef similar to what you get in a restaurant?

My wife did a pork butt on the green egg today and we had pulled pork tacos for dinner. I put an over easy egg on mine and that runny yolk was good.

We do homemade tacos at least once a week.

I always add onion and bell pepper to ground beef and then seasoning and let simmer for 15 min.

Alton brown has some decent base recipes for the seasoning mix. It gets the right consistency for ground meat tacos. And the flavor is pretty good on its own but probably better if you customize it a little

If you want fast n easy, look for the Frontera (chef Rick Bayless) brand seasoning sauces packaged in pouches. Several flavors, including a texmex version for ground beef.

Chili powder, cumin, salt, onion, garlic. Really can't go wrong with that

You don't get ground beef in tacos at good places. So get rid of that. And as you have discovered, store bought seasoning mixes are a bastardizatuon of what tacos are. My best taco is a sautéed onion garlic zucchini and portabello. ...then I make a Chipotle, ginger and lime aoili to go over the mix.....corn tortillas always. You could add pork or chicken to that and cut out the portabello . I also male a grilled salmon taco with a Chipotle mayo and add gobs of fresh basil mint and cilantro.

You can put anything in a taco....the rest of your post proves that.

What's wrong with ground beef? Google picadillo and realize that plenty of ground/shredded spiced beef is used in Mexican cooking. Just because you don't see it at a taqueria near you doesn't mean it isn't a "thing".

get your hands on some yellowfin tuna. cube the steaks into 1/2 inch cubes. soak them in a orang/lemon/lime juice mixture for two days. mix mayo and greek yogurt 50/50. get some shredded cabbage.

floured tortilla
tuna cubes (after you take them out of juice and season them)
cabbage
drizzle mayo/yogurt mix

We also make tacos about once a week. It's a good use for all the ground deer meat, and my kids love them. My wife buys the taco seasoning in the shaker like Tony's and just adds enough until it tastes good.

sounds like a winner to me. maybe add lemon pepper, black pepper or white pepper, paprika,orégano or something green?

Did these for the shop last week and its very easy plus the best part is no more biting into a taco and it falls apart!
black iron skillet 1/3 full @ 350 (favorite oil)
3 lbs. of ground beef or meat of choice, fish is great too
1 package of corn tortillas, 30 count
about 1/4 cup dried oregano
garlic powder
Chili powder
cumin
salt and pepper
bag of shredded lettuce
your go to hot sauce, i like the Pace hot on these
i then prep tomato, onions, hot peppers and avocados.
this will make around 20-25 tacos

time to get started, i only put the meat of half the tortilla (about 1/3 to 1/2 thick)

season them up good

once grease is to temp i drop 4 at a time,
the trick here is to let the oil soften up the tortilla then fold it over
cook for about 3/4 min on each side.

once done i place them in some type of dish upright and add the cheese (mex blend) while still hot.

then time to add your toppings of choice and enjoy

Those look damn good.

Did you have a self-serve defibrillator at the end of the serving line?

I typically use chili powder, cumin, salt and then sauté some onions before browning the meat. I also throw some garlic in when the meat is simmering. Sometimes I'll throw some diced jalapeño in with the onions.
