Geez Frat. That looks awesome. I really need a brewstand. But, i think my next equipment purchase will be a Blichmann HopBlocker.

Either that or a sight glass.

How far have you gotten through that book? I was moving along quickly at first but have stalled out some. Which is what I do for most of the books that I have. Use them more for reference than light reading.

I got about 2/3 of the way through and then left the rest to read as I need to.

I will probably buy another sight glass for of the keggles that will have liquid in it. Going to see if it is "necessary" or not first.

I'd imagine if you're already rigged up for one they're great but I'd rather just have the etchings inside the kettle or something showing volume. I really like the new Northern Brewer kettles although I doubt I'll ever have one.

Which Dude Diesel plate chiller did you buy?

I have the B3-12A-40, it works pretty well, but uses a lot of ice. I think the Blichmann Therminator works better, but this chiller was half the cost.

I've actually been contemplating upgrading to one of duda's larger chillers or a Jaded brewing immersion chiller

I bought the B3-23A-30 plate. I had a couple of friends recommend buying two 20 plate ones and connecting them in series, first with ground water the second with ice water. While that works really well, I didn't want to deal with 2 plate chillers. So I went with the 30 and will just cycle the wort back into the kettle once. Fill up my mash tun with ground water, run it through the chiller, then dump ice into the mash tun and run it though again. should work just fine. Cost was 150 shipped.

This is the one I was looking at purchasing...

I was reading their forum and someone asked about the plate chiller I have their response was...

quote:

not a good beer chiller. We only carry it because many do not realize that more plates is not necessarily better. Fortunately for you, you asked

Uh thanks for nothing assholes.

They are correct that more plates does not necessarily equate to better chilling. The length of the plates has a better impact on chilling from what I am told. But everyone seems to love the Blichmann model which has more shorter plates, so something has to be working with that one.

That is also a really lame thing for them to do.

Its getting close to Friday afternoon, almost the weekend. Anyone have brewing plans?

My plan is to brew 10 gallons of an American Pale Ale based off of a recipe that LA Homebrew shared. I haven't figured out the hops yet but I have Simcoe, Cascade, Amarillo and Centennial at the house and I cannot go wrong with those. It will be a mitigated disaster but I ran pbw and then clean water through the system yesterday and everything worked as planned. The only thing I have to figure out is the chilling system. The new chiller came in yesterday but I stupidly did not order the necessary connections, so it will be interesting. Brewing will probably start around Noon if anyone is interested in swinging by.

Brewing beer for our next race tomorrow with a few other guys. 3 beers going at once. I'm making a simple wheat, which will eventually become a peach wheat. Not sure what the other 2 guys are brewing.

Sadly no, we'll be in Shreveport area this weekend. Might get some great raft out of the trip though, so that'll be nice.

A friend gave us an extract version of PTE. Been thinking about what to do with it. Might mini mash some grains or something to help it out a little.

I tinkered around with the saison recipe I planned to use, then looked at the recipe thread, and it's the same grain bill as Bottomland's first saison posted

can't go wrong, right?

If I get off work in time today and the weather is cooperative, I'd like to brew my biere de garde this faternoon, but who the hell knows how that plan will work out.

Last night I tapped my saison that I fermented in my back shed. Pretty good saison, if I do say so myself, and I woke up without a headache today, so my fusel fears have been tempered some. I plan on taking the keg with me to Dog Island next week and parking it next to my beach chair.

I get off early, go get my ingredients, get home, start hearing the strike water, then it starts to rain. Might be doing a long mash.

You need to invest in a canopy.

I have a canopy, but I really need to invest in a house that's not below sea level. It's not just the water coming down that holds me up. There's also water that comes up.

Looks like the daily afternoon monsoon has moved on to Metairie.

That's not the only thing that sucks about the new AHB. Customer service seems to have gone out with the old website.
