Get a chimney. The small price is worth it to never have to run to the store just to get lighter fluid again. All you need is a lighter and wadded up newspaper, paper towel, or even a cardboard beer box.

Any of you ever grilled a single steak over just the chimney?

Yep.

FYI. When putting coals into pit after they are ready keep flip-flopped feet clear.

I would think twice before using match lite or lighter fluid to charcoal in a smoker. You are smoking for a long period of time, and the last thing you want is a taste of lighter fluid.
Go buy a charcoal chimney starter. They are cheap and it takes about 20 minutes for all of your charcoal to get well lit, plus you don't taste lighter fluid.

Also, if you are new to smoking, always smoke your wood chunks. If not you'll have a big flame and will likely burn all of your food

Like others have said...use the chimney. Otherwise you will have the taste of lighter fluid on your meat. Go on youtube and search Franklin BBQ videos. He goes over a lot of stuff and it is all pretty informative.

No, but apparently the trick is to flip the chimney upside down. That will be a hot fire!
