There is a "warning" to not use pre treated/instant light charcoal. What is the reasoning for that? Too much heat? I am new to smoking so does that also mean I can't smoke with instant light? Sorry if I should know the answers to this, but I don't so that is why I am asking.

What kind of smoker are you using?

Since it is new to me, I bought a cheap Brinkman to see if I even have the skill . If not, I'm not out but $50 and can give it to my folks to use as a grill if they want it. Or take it to the camp.

It'll work just just fine...the smoker and the fluid.

Matchlight gives me heart burn Lynyrd. Well, Matchlight, Old Charter and Copenhagen do anyway.

If it has legs, take a roll of tin foil and wrap the bottom of it...around the legs down to the ground. It'll cook like a mofo.

I grill with it just because it gives an even burn and heat, but wasn't sure on smoking. I get heartburn from lots and lots of beer. No Copenhagen for me.. I didnt play golf last Saturday because of temps and can't play this weekend. Let me know when you will be there and I'll try to be there.

Personally, I'd avoid pre-treated charcoal & lighter fluid in general. I know you're tip-toeing in with minimal expense, but I highly recommend lighting your charcoal with a chimney, wad of newspaper and matches. You may spend $15 on a chimney, but you'll save tons on lighter fluid and the finished product will actually be edible. Once you get away from lighter fluid, you can taste it in other's Q. Pretty nasty stuff.

The chimney goes in place of the charcoal tray? You are correct, I am new at this. I don't mind trying something. Hell, it may be a good idea to try a few tips at first to learn what works for me and the smoker. I'm all ears at this point

I haven't used fluid in 20 years. Chimney is the way to go.

I agree with using a chimney. It doesn't replace the charcoal tray in the pit. The chimney is used simply for lighting the charcoal briquets and getting them burning. Speeds up the process and eliminates the use of lighter fluid. Once the charcoal is burning, you empty the charcoal into the pit and get your cook on. It all just takes a little practice. Good luck.
