I've got reservations soon for the chef's table at Commander's Palace...what should I expect? Best meal of my life or overhyped sampler platter?

I used to work there in 2010. Saw an old lady damn near have a Meg Ryan type table orgasm when Chef Tory served her some fish. The chef’s table is awesome. Meg, the chef now, was a line cook when I was working in that kitchen.

I've only seen reviews of excellent experiences. I'll be interested in the experience with the new chef at the helm.

I'm not sure it will be the best meal of your life, but it will be way above a sampler platter.

I've been twice and it was awesome!

I have been to it twice. Fun time. Seemingly endless courses of delicious food paired with good wines. Fantastic service because the head chef is your head server (tip well). Atmosphere is lively and hectic rather than elegant and romantic because you are in the kitchen, but I highly recommend it. You get the best of the best of what they are cooking that night.

When did you book? I heard they are sold out for the rest of the year.

Just go in there with no expectations and soak up every moment of it. Don’t even come to this board to set expectations for yourself

It’s a 4 top and the food is $125/person + tax tip and alcohol. Figure it’ll be $1000 for all 4. Not bad for a world class dining experience.

Gotcha. They said they weren’t taking reservations for chef’s table when we asked a while ago because of Covid. Totally slipped my mind for a few months, then called in March or maybe April to check, and she said they were booked for the year. Not a big deal, but I hope you enjoy!

Wow, that' much less than I would have thought. Not a bad price at all.

Have done it twice. It’s an amazing time. Lots of amazing food…lots of booze.
Dessert is a little extreme as they bring out one of everything on the menu. At that point you just can’t go anymore. They give you a nice signed menu at the end of the meal. You have a designated waiter who is always top notch.

Tory McPhail was still there both times we went. I highly recommend it.

Is this your first time at a chefs table? Honestly curious because I feel like that would make a difference.

If you can't get reservations at the Chef's Table, they serve the same menu at the regular tables. They call it the Chef's Playground menu. They will also pair wines with it. It is basically the same thing, although at the Chef's Table they add on a few extra bells and whistles.

It was a great experience. Did it for my 40th. But I never did receive my signed copy of the menu as promised

I have done it twice, and have a reservation booked in March of 2022. Each time was a unique experience. Like the of the other posters said, just let your self take it all in and you will enjoy the hell out of it. I recommend the wine pairing. Unless you are a wine connoisseur, the regular pairing is perfect. The waiter will explain each wine, and why it’s paired with the course. Enjoy!

Did it 4-5 times with clients during the 12 years I covered Nola. All when Tory was in the kitchen. Its a phenomenal experience. As suggested get the wine pairing so you don’t have to think even a little bit. Just sit back and consume.

Agree with the people saying to get the wine pairing. Let the professionals take care of everything. It's similar to omakase in that you want to be able to just sit back and trust the chef. The point is to just let the food and wine come to you as the chef sees fit and just enjoy the whole experience of letting someone else be in charge of your mouth and stomach for a couple hours.

It will definitely not be a glorified sampler platter at Commander's. It's going to be fine dining and it's going to be freaking GOOD. Don't expect The French Laundry, though, either.

I sat there tasting food and wine for my rehearsal dinner and that was a lot of fun. I can’t imagine the full experience wouldn’t be significantly better.

We did the wine cellar almost 10 years ago. That was a fantastic experience chatting with the chef and captain about their incredible food and wine. It didn’t have the hustle and action of the kitchen though.
