Kimball

In a change that's sure to send ripples through a media empire built on a thoughtful and rigorous approach to food, chef Chris Kimball is leaving America's Test Kitchen, the company he co-founded. Kimball's departure comes two months after the company got its first-ever CEO.

"Kimball's departure is immediate," says the Boston Common Press, the parent company of America's Test Kitchen, which says the two sides weren't able to agree over Kimball's contract. Kimball, 64, is also leaving his spot as the editor-in-chief of Cook's Illustrated magazine.

The 2016 seasons of TV shows America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country will air as normal, with Kimball, wearing his trademark bow tie and round spectacles, as host, the company says.

"We made every effort to offer Chris a reasonable contract that reflected his significant contributions to the company and are disappointed that we could not reach agreement," says Boston Common Press CEO David Nussbaum. "We know this change will be a surprise to many, but we are confident that the ensemble cast, 50 test cooks and support team for America's Test Kitchen will continue to offer our audiences the same high-quality product going forward."

With nearly 2 million weekly viewers, America's Test Kitchen is "the most-watched cooking show on public television," according to the show's website. If it sticks to recent broadcast schedules, the show will launch its 16th season in January.

In September, Kimball had just finished taping the ninth season of another show, Cook's Country, at his home in Vermont when Nussbaum was hired to fill a newly created role as the CEO of America's Test Kitchen. Nussbaum left his job leading F+W Media to take the post. At the time, the move was explained as the result of the need for a seasoned executive to oversee rapid growth by America's Test Kitchen's TV and digital properties — and company officials dismissed rumors that the move might force Kimball out.

"The popularity and financial growth of America's Test Kitchen and our related enterprises over the past few years have prompted us to formally create the role of CEO," Boston Common Press' Eliot Wadsworth said at the time, as Boston magazine reported.

At the time of that September announcement, things were already tense in the offices of the recipe-testing company, which has a radio and TV production house at its headquarters outside of Boston. The Boston Globe reported:

"America's Test Kitchen has been in tumult in recent weeks, with rumors flying after a staff meeting and an earlier e-mail regarding coming changes. That e-mail, sources close to the company said, indicated Kimball might depart with wife, Melissa Baldino, an executive producer there, to form a new company."
Rumors that Kimball might start a new venture have resurfaced with today's news. On his Twitter account around noon today, he posted a photo of himself at a train station in Boston, posing with a man who wanted to take a selfie with him.

Update: 'It's Friendly,' Kimball Says

Kimball won't be leaving the world of public media, he tells the newspaper Current. That includes 12 station events he's doing in 2015 – and he confirms that he has a new project in the works, to be announced in January.

When Current asked what Kimball's title is at Boston Common Press, he replied, "Interesting question, isn't it? I don't know what I am. I'm still on the shows for next year, and we may still be working together."

"We're still talking, and it's friendly," he added.

In its news release about Kimball's exit, Boston Common Press notes that in addition to hiring Nussbaum, it also promoted longtime America's Test Kitchen editor Jack Bishop to the post of chief creative officer. And it says that America's Test Kitchen plans to hire at least 25 new employees in the first quarter of 2016, mainly in its content, television production and digital media units.

Tbh, I think he is really awkward and plays dumb too much.

I'll turn off the show because of him.

I find this surprising because he is the one who started the entire thing and is a co-owner in the company. However, if he was just a host then I wouldn't think twice. He is easily my least favorite person on the show although he doesn't bother me. I remember a few moments where he came across a little snooty. I could see him being a real pain to work for.

WHAT? This is really sad news.

Although I can't say I'd miss his "hosting" since he hates spicy food and is a baby about it every time someone makes it, but I just feel bad that the dude is losing something he started himself.

I'd he is anything like how he acts on the show, I don't doubt it.

Agreed. His show is generally informative enough to be watchable, but his schtick is a bit goofy.

I do find the notion of him really trying play "hardball" on this somewhat amusing, though. Perhaps because of that.

Sounds like he's getting screwed. I like the show and he's never bothered me. He's nerdy, but it works on the show. If they change it too much, I may not be too interested.

There was a really good New Yorker profile on him a few years back. I've always appreciated his honesty about cooking, i.e. it isnt some dreamscape, Tuscan farmhouse affair for everyone. For many people cooking is nothing more than drudge work and the more foolproof ATK can make it the better.

His television persona is a more amped up character than his real life persona.

I can't watch the show b/c of him, and the magazine never "spoke" to me. Too fixated on the "one best" way to do something (roast a chicken, grill a steak). Guess I'm not in the target market....

Really surprised at this. I thought it was pretty much his company. He is nerdy, and I get the feeling he might be an irritating boss, but I thought the 2 shows were damn near perfect. Very good chemistry and I learned so much. I kind of got annoyed that they would repackage the same recipe base into various collections with overlapping recipes. Great way to make a buck, I guess.

I saw Kimble and Julia get out of a Mercedes and walk towards Commanders one day. I thought they might be doing "research" on the company tab.

He was a little nerdy and his shtick was wearing thin, but the show is about cooking information, he conveyed that as well as anyone. He was the cover of the book, the rest is pretty good.

Tried the magazine for a year once, but didn't renew. I used to read the forums on occasion, but I haven't looked at those in years.

Sat next to him on a flight from San Francisco to Chicago a few years ago. He's an interesting guy. Big dead head- traveled all over the country following them. Big deer and bird hunter. He was already worth a bunch now if he is being bought out he'll make some real money.

He has done this before- build a company and get out. He will be around.

Jack Bishop is an interesting guy too. I have an Italian cookbook of his.

CI shut down the forums a few years ago. Some of the folks who posted there started cookaholics.org board, but it is not very active.

I subscribed to CI when I started learning to cook. It helped a lot on basic techniques, picking good equipment, dispelling cooking myths, etc. I still get it, but I find myself ignoring most of the recipes and focusing on product reviews and the short segments on tips and techniques.

I suffer Kimball's shtick on the ATK and CC shows to get the decent info. They are some of the better food shows on TV.

I also subscribe to the CI website and listen to the free ATK Radio podcasts (too much about baking and desserts for me, but okay).

They are spice wusses, and they tend to always look for a simpler approach for home cooks when I might prefer a legit, full-effort recipe, but I find enough good info to stick with them.

I pulled up their Chicken Enchiladas with Red Chile Sauce recipe today for cooking this weekend. That's a pretty good one.

I was recently wondering what they would do when Chris left. He couldn't live forever. I guess we will see soon enough.

Guess I'm in the minority, I really like him. His persona on the show is so much different than anyone elses, I like the dry humor. I don't think the show will be as good without CK.
