Blue Bell refused to put a born on, expiration, or sell by date on their ice cream

The numbers on the bottom of the containers look like exp dates to me. They aren't?

Not sure. maybe they've started putting them. Is it an obvious and easy to understand exp date, or just a series of numbers?

Looks obvious to me. I'm a date checker too and have always checked the ice cream. I can't recall when I haven't seen a date on the bottom or what appears to be one. A pint I bought about 6 months or so ago says 111916D.

They do somewhere around 600 million in sales per year and the recall and facilities upgrades are expected to cost around 4-10 million, plus a few million maybe in settlements to victims. I would think they have plenty of reserves to weather the storm.

From their website.

Q: Why doesn't Blue Bell have an expiration date?

A: It's been said that the main reason is because our fans are eating it as fast as we can crank it out. But, keeping Blue Bell fresh depends more on special handling and tender loving care than anything else. Many foods rely on preservatives to maintain quality, but ice cream and other related frozen desserts depend on sub-zero temperatures in the range of -10 degrees to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. At this constant temperature, Blue Bell's great taste can be preserved for a little over a year. However, if Blue Bell is subjected to warm temperatures, it will melt and then refreeze, creating an icy texture. Since ice cream is so sensitive and relies on special handling, a "freshness date" would be very misleading.

Why waste your splurging on mediocre ice cream like blue bell when ben and jerry's

blue bells generic flavors (chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, etc) >>>>>> ben & jerrys generic flavors

however

ben & jerry's specialty flavors >>>>>> blue bells

I personally prefer generic flavors to specialty. so I like blue bell more

hope BB gets back on its feet and gets as good as ever

Jeni's is the best I've had

They had a booth at Austin Food & Wine last year and I was working the bar tent right next to them. I think I ate more ice cream in those two days than I did the entire rest of the year...and it was FREE

So freaking good.

Yes, Jeni's is amazingly good...but Whole Foods carried it for a short time locally. It was $9.99 a PINT. Okay, I pay silly money for some things I like, but pricing bulk ice cream in a tub higher than a retail scoop is too rich for me.

Out of those Ben & Jerry's, I've only had vanilla, and I thought it was the best vanilla ice cream I ever bought in a store. The problem is finding it. I've only seen it at Fresh Market and Whole Foods.

Bizarre. They sure do look like freshness dates to me. Must be some code for something I guess. I knew the letters represented the plant or I thought that's what they were.

When I buy cold items in the summer, I put them in those insulated bags for the ride home. Car gets hot when it sits at the grocery. I hate icy ice cream, though I'm not an ice cream fanatic.

How bad is listeria anyway?

Am I going to die or am I just going to have an upset stomach for a day or two?
If you're healthy, you'll have a painful and upset stomach for a few days. If you're immunocompromised in any way, it's not good and will probably put you in the hospital.

I understand that Blue Bell can't control the temps when the product reaches the stores, but not having any understandable dating on the product seems wrong and only benefits Blue Bell and not the consumer.

I'm pretty sure you're just trying to make a point about the company, itself, but just to be clear, listeria has nothing to do with the freshness date of the product.

I go one step further and add some ice packs to my insulated bag.

I don't know how anyone can live with me and all my OCD's, but she does, bless her heart.

I'm aware of that, and yes I am making a point about the company. The non-date thing has always bothered me but I've always purchased and enjoyed Blue Bell ice cream.
