Already have one of the normal sized BGE, but I was looking at possibly getting the mini for when Ms. McCaigBro and I tailgate Ranger games.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the mini and if so, what is your thoughts on it?

Also, for some reason BGE's are the only thing in the world that you can't find a price for online. Anyone know how much the mini's go for?

I have a mini--6 or 7 years ago, it cost around $325? I think. It's a neat little thing--gets quite hot, quickly, but that cooking area is QUITE small. If you only cook for 1 or 2 regularly, it's fine....as long as you aren't trying to do sides & mains all at once. Frankly, there are cheaper/easier, just as good alternatives for portable grills. It can be "dialed down" to low heat like its bigger relatives, so it is possible to do low-n-slow, for exceptionally tiny cuts of meat.

Someone owed me a few bucks & I got the mini, but I probably wouldn't buy it again. You can get a Lodge hibatchi for $100 or less (though it doesn't have a lid).

ETA: I definitely wouldn't pay $400 for it.

I havent cooked on one, but friend has it. Not sure I would get that for tailgating. It has a really small cooking surface and is still delicate ceramic. They also MSRP for like $400. I would get the small if I needed a BGE for tailgating. Minimax at very least.

But a weber kettle is better for tailgating or a weber Joe if space is an issue. If you need low and slow, I would do one of the non-ceramic kamados before a BGE if primary purpose if for tailgating. They run around $300.

Temporary hijack:

For those with a BGE.

A brisket is the only thing I haven't smoked on this thing and I plan to do one this weekend.

Do you find, let's say for a 12 hour smoke, that you have to refill the charcoal during the smoke or is it able to last?

If not, when do you find yourself having to refill?

Fill it all the way up to the fire ring and mine will go 18-20 hours without refilling. Maybe more, but never tried.

You shouldn't need to refill. I've seen people do 16+ smokes without refilling. I do 12 hr smokes on less than 1/3 of a firebox being burnt.

Weber Jumbo Joe is best for tailgating. Very portable and has 18 inches grate size.

I am smoking my first one either Sun or Mon. Haven't even started and have already made one mistake: I bought just the flat.

It's only my girlfriend and I most days, sometimes there's four of us. So it doesn't sound like size would be too much of an issue. Regardless, doesn't sound worth it.

Thanks to everyone who answered!

Damn! I had a chance to get a mini at a garage sale a few years back for $20. If I knew they go for $400 I'd have scooped it up.

If you've got just the flat with no real fat cap, you can smoke it for about three hours at 225, then wrap it in foil w some liquid (apple juice, coke, beer, whatever floats your boat) and continue cooking at around 275-300 for another 2-4 hours depending on size. Those little 3 lb trimmed flats will be tender in 4.5-5 hrs total cook time.
