Who goes for these? Which place does it best? Thinking I am going to try this next time I'm there.
ETA: Was looking at Coquette's website and it got me thinking.

Coquette usually/always has one and it's excellent.
Square Root was created for this exact reason.

You just mean a tasting menu where they bring you stuff? OR a blind tasting where you eat blindfolded or in the dark? I know they do that as a charity event for the radio for the blind.

Square Root if you've got that kind of dough

Yes. Chef's choice on what to serve you.

Not so much.

Although not technically a tasting menu or anything:
Go to Shogun in Metry. Sit in Koz's end of the sushi bar. Tell him you want to eat Omakase (basically chef's choice, multiple sushi courses). He'll blow your balls off.

August, Square Root, and Commander's chef's table.

Gotta go with Square Root on this one, but I think I'm the only one on TDs who's been there.

Chef's Playground at Commander's
Coquette's 5 course is legit as well
Id get the wine pairings with both.
I went to a private party at Square Root. They are really proud of their food but to me it was just meh.

Tell me about it, Degas. I have a reservation Friday night and really have no idea what's coming our way.

Chef Lopez has changed the format up a few times since the beginning and it's been a few months since I've been there, so I'm not sure exactly what you'll encounter. The menu is always changing as well.
He started out with just two seatings per night, serving all 16 diners the same course at the same time. Then he went to staggered seating where you could pick the time to start.
I believe he started up the restaurant with a 15 course meal (don't be scared...all small plates) and then dropped it down during the week. If you're there on a Friday you'll be getting the full blown shebang.
Also offered is wine pairings and a drink pairing as well (some wine, some various drinks). I went with the drink pairing and I closed out my tab right around $200 for just myself.
It's a lot of fun. Expect a lot of the unexpected...liquid nitrogen and modernist cuisine, and by all means, PLEASE REPORT BACK. I've yet to talk to anyone who's been there. It's usually a friend of a friend who's eaten there.

Ohh god, if your wife is picky, dont go to a blind tasting place. That is a terrible idea.
Why does the tasting have to be blind? There are very few places in the world that actually do a truly blind tasting (meaning you have no idea what is coming). Almost all of he mega course places will at least give the diner a menu at the beginning of the meal.
I understand the inclination to do big tasting menus. I do them when I travel, but I've always enjoyed going to a place, looking at the menu and putting together a "tasting" of my own. 5-7 small plates, an entree or 2 split, couple desserts, etc... I think more restaurants can pull that off better than a true blind tasting.

Nah, i went with a group during a festival. Food was good, but not mind blowing, unlike the bill. Presentation and service was great.

You know what it's really missing is that satisfying savory course. Each of the small plates were fun, but I would have loved some sort of knock your socks off entree, even if it means cutting back a few courses.

i would agree with that. hard to spend that dough and not be sated.
