Awww..Shucks

First experience with Shucks on Highland Rd., the Lafayette based seafood restaurant. Friday night, very crowded, and manned by the 'not ready for prime time' staff.
We were seated promptly, but it seemed most of the night that our waiter was working too many tables, it took a while to get drinks and the water we requested. Then we ordered the grilled oysters for an appetizer, they came out in due time and were pretty good, BTW they have about 5 different versions. We ordered dinner, I got the crab cakes, SO got the half and half shrimp and oysters, she asked if the shrimp could be broiled, yes, no problem.
Here is where things went a little south, when the dishes came out the crab cakes were cold and the shrimp on SO's were fried, not broiled as ordered. Waiter asks if everything is OK, no, I explain. SO said the fried shrimp are OK, she'll eat them anyway, I send back the crab cakes. It takes about 10 minutes and I get hot crab cakes.
These are not primo crab cakes, tasty but a lot of bread crumbs and filler, they'll do. Then 2 of SO's fried oysters have huge pieces of shell in them. I've lived in La. my whole life, I know even the best shucker misses a small shell sometimes, these were bigger than that.
Finish up, ask for the check and it is messed up, not what we ordered. Call waiter over, he will fix it. Waiting...waiting, check comes back it is closer than last time, one dish is different, a $6 difference, I do the math myself and leave the right amount in cash.
On the way out we tell the manager the issues, he said "sorry" and shrugged his shoulders. I am not a picky demanding diner, I haven't sent a dish back in 10 years. Shuck's hasn't gotten it's act together yet, maybe they will one day. Roux 61 has been open less time, another branch from a nearby city and they are light years ahead of Shucks.

Shucks is actually based out of Abbeville, and is a mediocre restaurant at best.

Shucks in abbeville is not a great restaurant but they do a few things really well. Always unbelievably fresh oysters, really cold crisp draft beer, great seafood gumbo, good fried seafood and poboys. If you're not going for those few items it is average. If the BR location can't get those few things down to a science then it probably won't make it IMO

Roux 61
Cheaper than Shucks by quite a bit.

I went to both of the new oyster bars (Shucks, and Duke's in Watson) on back-to-back nights. Duke's was superior.

That's what I initially thought as well, but their portion sizes are huge, and the food is great.

What kind of rubbed me wrong was the manager's attitude, like "hey buddy, we're crowded, making money, I really don't care if we screwed your order up, go someplace else."
Didn't ask for anything to be comped, never do, just act like you give a crap.

Wasn't impressed at all. Not to mention, inexplicably pricey.

I was wondering if this was related to the previous restaurant "La Creole', but since ya'll say there is another one in Abbeville, than I guess that it is not. Thanks for the review.

wow! i have not read or heard a positive review of this place since it opened. That's disappointing.

This always strikes me as odd when people make this comment. I don't need a humongous plate of food, and I don't generally like to bring home leftovers.
Why can't I pay half the price for a normal-sized portion?
Why do we feel okay about paying more for "humongous" portions?
I will say, that with this information, when I finally do try Roux 61, I will just split an entree with the SO.

exactly. I would rather have a moderate plate of really good food.

Please take this stuff to the Portion Size thread.

Did Stabler do away with his best crab cake in the city (and maybe state) that he served while operating under the name of Le Creole?

I've been twice to Roux 61 and enjoyed my experiences. I usually order the Asian glazed chicken wings for my meal and steak bites as my appetizer.
My wife ordered the Fried Shrimp and thought it was very tasty. Portion size is not lacking for the price paid.

I agree with all of what you said. There's a thread on it right now, actually :) That said, I didn't find Roux 61 much more expensive than others of its type.
I do recommend splitting though. We split the big seafood platter between THREE people and still sent enough for 2 small meals home with one of the people.
