Looking for a good place in Austin for dinner. Something low key, preferably a local bbq place or pizza place. TIA

Home Slice on S. Congress for pizza, tons of BBQ options. Saltlick and Countyline are always good. I'm new to ATX so still learning the landscape, but have been really impressed so far.

it may have been mentioned but the bbq place outside of town is sposed to be real good.

the bbq place outside of town
that narrows it down to about 40 places
regardless, Franklin BBQ is still the best BBQ in 4 counties, and it's under the interstate, in the middle of town

Hula Hut- Polynesian Tex-Mex. Sounds weird, but it really works.
Threadgills is good. Iron Cactus used to have a jalapeno margarita that was good, too.

i duno some famous place where you eat on picnic tables and bring your own alcohol or something

The only time to visit the Nut Hut is during the summer, and that's to stare at the talent, not to eat the food
Threadgills' food is always too bland
Cactus is pretty good, but the best specialty 'rita in town is Curra's Avocado Margarita

Salt Lick in Driftwood....it's average, but their BBQ sauce is tops

If you're downtown or close to it, Iron Works for BBQ.
If you're in Austin, I recommend TexMex over Pizza. Try Maudie's/Polvo's/Trudy's/Curra's/Vivo

Magnolia Grill on Congress. Worth it.

What 4 counties?, and Franklin is good but not great. It's the best Austin proper has to offer. But the brisket's only redeeming quality is the fattiness. Scrape off the fat and you have a piece of meat with no smoky flavor.

Offshoreangler is correct.
As for low key pizza.... Home Slice is not. But right down the street on South Congress is Southside Pizza, it's lower key than HomeSlice, and near on par. I enjoy it when Home Slice is too crowded....which is almost always.
Now idk where in Austin you are at, but a great pizza joint that does NewJersey/Brooklyn style pizza is Saccones Pizza. Also try Al Forno's, it just opened up and is pretty good. Both are in North Austin.

Almost their entire menu is pre frozen or made at a commissary. All the veggies are made days in advanced, vacuum sealed and cooled till ready to use. Eddie Wilson has really made that place suck lately...dang old hippie.

gotta disagree - I think it's full of flavor, and right up there with Kreuz'
I'm not a big HomeSlice fan either, and think it gets way too much praise.
