Arse's Fatty Rewind™ (Jazz Fest Second Weekend)

Good morning. Fest is over and I am grateful. Mother's day is around the corner, and I hope we can all share some good grub and drinks with our moms on Sunday.
I left work a little early on Friday to enjoy the insane weather we had this past weekend. I grabbed a Beam and walked around outside for a little. We had dinner reservations at Purloo for 7. After the walk, I had some time to kill so we decided to grab a cocktail at Cure.
The bar was pretty full for their happy hour. I decided against ordering a sazerac (which I usually get during their happy hour) and went with a bourbon cocktail. I don't recall the name, but "Terrytown" was a part of it. You can't go wrong with a name like that. It had bourbon, egg whites, bitters and orange. It was delicious and fluffy. They knocked it out of the park.
From Cure, we headed to Purloo. We made reservations on Opentable, and I had never been before.I had heard mixed reviews from my friends.
The restaurant is next door to the Southern Food Museum on Oretha Castle Haley. They actually share a wall, which is a curtain. I assume they can pull the curtain back to allow for space for private parties. The restaurant was not that packed. We we seated at the kitchen, which I found interesting for Opentable.
I ordered an old fashion, and shot the shite with the young guy in the kitchen. He was busy making deviled eggs. I believe he told me he peeled at least 300 eggs that day.I love devilled eggs.
After discussing the entrees with the staff, we decided to go with the short ribs and softshell crab. We also ordered the board for our app. It came with boiled peanuts, devilled eggs, pimento cheese, fried pickles, and some smoked meat.
[/img]
The board was pretty good. I found the peanuts to be interesting. The pimento was very delicious. The ribs were tender, but I was not blown away. I enjoyed the crab and it's cornmeal crust. The size of the crab was also nice. I was not crazy about the "jambalaya" it was served with. It was more of a risotto in my opinion.
After dinner, I wanted to sneak my head into a place on the corner I have passed several times in the past weeks. It is the New Orleans Jazz Market, which I discovered is run by NOJO. I had always seen nicely dressed people inside with live music being played.
I walked in a grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender said that they had only been open a couple of weeks, but mostly had private parties. They operate as a bar during the night and a community center during the day.
Their cocktails were good, and the music was better. Trombone Mafia was playing. I grabbed a blueberry bourbon drink, and followed it with a blackberry bourbon. The blueberry was my favorite.
After a while, I grew tired and decided to head home. I passed out to prepare for the long day I had in store on Saturday.
I awoke with a slight hangover around 6. I got dressed to run some errands. After I was done, I went to District Donuts and grabbed a chicken biscuit. It had a red gravy and slaw on it. It was hot and amazing. It was a good base for the shite show that was about to occur.
When I returned home, I made a mint julep and tried to read up on the ponies. I needed to make some bets.
I made a refill and then headed to the Fest. I would be in the same tent as last week.
Upon arrival, I grabbed a Coors and walked to Congo Square. It was not too crowded.
I then grabbed a crawfish bread for nostalgia. It was not that good.
After a little music, we went to the tent to get some beers and dine. It was the same food as last week, with the additions of beef sliders, meat pies and red beans. I missed the gumbo. The sliders were very good. The meat pies were meh. I pounded several cubans and chased them down with a couple pitchers of Miller Lite.

After we eating, we returned to Congo Square. It was starting to get crowded quickly at Fest.
After watching some Dee 1 and Soul Rebels, we walked around to meet some friends and get some food. I can't stand crowds so I was anxious to head out.
The food lines were out of control. One could barely move across the lines. I grabbed a pork chop sandwich on the way out and never looked back.
I liked the sandwich a lot. The pork chop was flavored nicely and it paired well with the sliced white bread. I could not find any mayo, which would have made the sandwich slightly better.
On the way out, I stopped at CC's on Esplanade to grab a coffee. I needed to last until early Sunday morning.
When we got home, I poured a Beam and threw on the Tigers. Great game, and we almost pulled off the sweep.
After the game, we went to Johnny Sanchez before heading to the Saenger for Nevilles Forever. I started with some guacamole, crickets and a El Jefe.
The mural is still fricking awesome.
I then requested the snapper ceviche and goat tacos. The lady went with the enchilada special. I believe it came with crawfish.
The ceviche was nice, but it was lacking in fish. I think it had four small pieces. The tacos were great, but the enchiladas were the star of the show.
After dinner we went to the show. We were in a suite, so we had access to the VIP lounge. I grabbed my seat and a double Makers.
The first set was very good. The "establishment" of New Orleans music performed hit after hit. Trombone Shorty is something special.
LINK
At the intermission, I went to the lounge to grab a snack. The meatballs were very good. After a nibble, I grabbed some more Makers and a couple cookies for the second set.
The show went downhill in the second act. I almost fell asleep. Widespread performed and I'm pretty sure most of the old timers there had no clue who they were. The Nevilles came on last, and I think they should not come out again.
After the show, we went home to crash. I awoke early to head to mass. I shite, showered and headed out the door.
It was the last day of Novena and I was ready to get some Christ in me. After mass, the ushers had a cake sale. I grabbed a white cake for $1.50 and it was well worth it. I took it down with some Beam and slow jams.
After a few rounds and meeting several Jazz Festers, I walked to Matassa's and got a catfish poor boy. It was the day's special. The fish was cooked well, but old boy made the filets swim in mayo. I couldn't handle the slop.
After lunch, I went home to get lazy. I was exhausted from the day before. I sat on the couch and watched some stupid shows with a Beam.
Before bed, we made some wings with garlic and parmesan and a salad. I love salad sometimes.
I passed out around 8. It was a good weekend.
Stay fat, my friends.

You ever think about trading off the Beam for some high quality marijuana? Your liver would thank you.

Love Johnny Sanchez. The lamb enchiladas are the shite!

Johnny Sanchez got mostly love on here when it first opened but it seemed to taper off people talking about it…went a couple of weeks ago and had another great experience
what a waste I hate when places do that

I've learned to always ask for light mayo at Matassa's which results in a regular portion of mayo. Good poboys and prices.

That pink slaw squirt that leaked into the biscuit does not look very appetizing IMO

when I saw the pic of the sandwich, I questioned whether I would have given it to my dog…then his review was positive

Several people have raved about that pork chop sandwich on here in the past couple weeks, and I agree.. it looks so blah.

I had a similar experience at Purloo. Everything was ok, but nothing memorable.
I'm not sure they're going to make it.

For a Friday night during Jazz Fest, they were certainly lacking patrons.

Did you try the praline stuffed beignets? They were really good. Tiny, but only $5, and with it being very sweet you can't each much of it anyway.

That soft shell crab looks legit.

No. I only walked by Gentilly once. I saw them, but had just purchased the sweet potato pie.
