Read an article a while back about how Subway was full of msg and such, even their veggies and bread are tainted. So I got to wondering if Grocery stores like Winn-Dixie, LeBlancs, Ralphs(ones around me I frequent) use fresh ingredients and don't msg-up their daily fresh prepared meals/sammiches/salads?

I been trying to eat those once or twice a week when I have a hectic schedule and 200 mile day rather than settle for fast food or pay for sit-down restaurant.

So far a fave has been Ralphs(Gonzales) salad bar $5.99/lb
and
Winn-Dixie pville has a 1lb fajita salad mix of chicken and fajita veggies in a vinaigrette I really liked.

I know I should try and prep a meal for after work and keep it cold somehow but that's not always practical.

Just don't know if these are worth going in a store for versus Subway or Quiznos or Izzos if you try and make a healthy meal out of those 3.

That was my fear. I used to work near Towncenter WF years ago and it was about $9 /lb salad back then.

So should I just try and eat something decent at a fast food place when I'm in a crunch or what?
Eta: I'm well educated on calories and carbs and such but not nearly smart as some of y'all on the chemistry and behind the scenes tactics.

I would not think they add msg to salad bar items.

I was hoping their greens and what not came from their produce section and not some packaged crap like Subway gets from a commissary.

And I know the chopped turkey and ham on a salad bar will have whatever the deli meats have and that's fine. Just trying to change up and be a little healthier on my uber hectic routine days. Thanks man. I sure FEEL better after a good workout and then getting 1lb of Ralphs Salad Bar instead of Subway sammich and chips. All this hurrying from one job to the next or to my son's football practice 30 miles away.

This one is pretty easy to answer. First of all msg doesn't mean it's unhealthy. It's a flavor enhancer that gets a really bad rap for causing problems in large intakes for a small amount of people.

Secondly if you want to make the grocery store salad bar healthy..eat the healthy stuff. Get lettuce, spinach, cucumbers, carrots, some turkey or ham and don't load it with a pint of ranch, cheese and bacon and you'll be good. Salad bars can be as healthy or unhealthy as you want.

Thanks dawg. That's exactly what I do. Load up on the leavy greens, bellpeps and unjuns, shrrooms, jalapeeners, some cubed turkey or chicken(I can't tell the frickin difference) then sprinkled lightly with parmesan or shred cheddar. And try and find the lightest ranch or bleu cheese I can find and use one or package. If no light dressings I will seek out oil and vinegar.

I'm trying man, I'm really tryin.

I was just wondering too about prepped meals. Like that fajita salad hodgepodge I got from Winn-Dixie. Was AWESOME stuff, light and filling.

Stay away from raw onions. One of the leading causes of food born illnesses.

I love onions, but when I go to a game or the movies and get a hot dog I always see those onions out in a tub and never touch them.

fricking this. All of this is better than the fast food option you have been doing.

On another note lets play grab arse on Saturday.

I would stay away from dressings all together. Just because they use words like "light" and "fat free" does not mean they're good for you. Try vinegar and even add some oil for a dressing. Those are better options.

As far as the fajitas, what kind of chicken are they using? Breasts or thighs? If breasts, you can't go wrong. If thighs, those can get up there in terms of fat:protein rations and are generally higher in terms of sodium as well. If it's beef fajita those will always be higher in both categories as well.

It's hard to keep it clean and healthy if you aren't prepping the meals yourself. You'll never truly know what places are using what in their foods...But these are things we already know. Good luck.

The ranch I agree with to an extent, but there's no reason at all to avoid shredded cheese and bacon. It's ok to consume those items.

Sure, but they definitely don't make your salad healthier.

I love onions but always cook them, even if it's a quick saute before adding to the dish.

I know man. Even if it's a ham and cheese sammich and doritos I at least know.

The chicken I'm realizing was turkey breast. They have a lot of that shite in Winn-Dixie. Haha

I also don't like dressings that much either( I mean I LOVE ranch but...). I try and get oil and vinegar if possible but that's usually sit-down or Jason's deli.

Anyhoots. Trying to do more fresh shite like salads and cut out the pizza all together. Takes effort since I'm back there working a lot again.
So hot and yummy and FREEEE. Can NOT go there on empty stomach after a workout.

Whether the store salad bar is truly fresh depends on the store. Plenty use bagged, precut items purchased in bulk....nothing wrong with that, except many are treated to prevent browning. If you're sensitive to sulfites, it can be a problem.

Fresh & good don't necessarily mean raw. Nothing wrong with pizza: skip the cheese & load up on veg toppings.

I like to think they're better than fast food joints. It can certainly be healthy if you make it that way, particularly salads. I just had a to-go lunch from LeBlanc's.. baked chicken thigh, drumstick, mixed veggies, green beans and ham (I'm back on a low carb kick so I opted for fatty chicken instead of breast). Definitely better than a giant hamburger and fries from Brewbacher's.

Well I am trying to cut carbs and bad fats(Dr. Orders and for weight loss). So I have been doing better with egg white and veggie omelets, sammich and chips for lunch, and salad bar or something reasonable for supper. I'm not set in some certain diet , just less bad stuff more good stuff and around 2kcal a day.
