Actually, the article claims these to be the 17 MOST important restaurants.

They all tend to come across as trying way too hard.
Be that as it may, who the hell knew they served grouper at Mandinas?

Stupid list.
Commanders
Herbsaint
August
Root
Those 4 are the only ones listed that are currently of any "importance".
The rest either never were or are no longer important.

And they would all be good. But there are some establishments that are time-honored institutions, even if they go back only a few years, and will mostly likely continue to have some serious influence on the local dining landscape for years -- or centuries -- to come. Here, then, are the most important eateries in a city filled with amazing cooking and service.

I did, as well, the "most important" made the list silly.
I doubt the guy has eaten at many of these restaurants lately.

Ehhh, I could never eat at Antoines again as long as I live, but as long as it's still open, I can make a reasonable argument that it's still an "important" restaurant.
Yes, of course, it's also still a silly, bordering on pointless, distinction.

Antoine's is a historic grand dame restaurant which isn't as good as it used to be from my last experiences there. Historically, it's important. Food wise, it's lost that spot, in my opinion.
Pascal's Manale has long since lost the importance related to the BBQ shrimp other than being the first to make the dish, I believe. Today, that dish is awful, flavorless and oily, though the shrimp are still expertly cooked as far as "doneness" and are beautiful. The oysters rock remain as one of my favorite versions and I happen to love oysters rock. They used have crabmeat rock as an entree. It was terrific. Buttery jumbo lump crabmeat in a gratin dish topped with the rock sauce. No longer on the menu.
