Big discussion over this at work. Do you tip when you pick up an order to go?

Usually just a buck or two.

Depends, but usually I do a dollar or two. My wife believes it should be the standard 20%, but I say that's only when you are being actually served and bussed. Throwing food in a bag and taking my money does not equal big tips.

Yes but I always check the bottom line first. Some restaurants automatically add a gratuity on to go orders.

Shouldn't really get anything for that, IMO

It depends on the place. If it's the sort of place that doesn't usually "do" takeout & they give my order extra consideration (decent containers, some cutlery, any necessary condiments), I will tip generously. Standard sort of takeout place isn't getting more than a dollar or two.

Never seen that before. Always at least $2.

Agreed hungryone. Anyone who's been in the business of a restaurant knows that to go orders can actually be more time consuming than simply waiting on a table.

If I'm ordering a chicken teriyaki from Subway, I'll leave a buck. If I'm getting take away from a restaurant, I'm leaving 20% or more.

I usually tip a buck or so. But I only tip at restaurants -- there's a little store in my neighborhood that makes po-boys and hamburgers and I don't tip there. I figure all those people working there are making at least minimum wage and the person working the cash register would take my tip, not the guy flipping burgers.

Yes, usually 4-5 bucks.

Someone preps that stuff.

I waited tables for a long damn time and completely disagree.

"To go" shift was desirable in that you didn't work as hard, actually got paid minimum wage, AND still get some tips from people who think like posters in this thread.

A lunch shift as "to-go" was essentially running expo, bagging food, and closing tickets. Very easy. And that's also the shift when corporate credit cards are used the most, and people are generally more generous with the companies money. Tips weren't expected, but nice to get.

Personally, I give them $1 plus however much change is needed to make my purchase a round number...unless using the company card

ETA: BIG EXCEPTION - If the bartender is responsible for "to-go", while also working the bar, I tip them normally b/c it's a giant pain in the arse to do both.

10% is the proper gratuity on to go orders. The hostess a lot of places is responsible for making sure everything is as ordered and stocked with the proper additions and utensils.
