I have a 2007 GTI with 150k miles. No major problems in 12 years. My sister had a 2009 Tiguan, with essentially the same engine, and had all kinds of issues.

You can buy my 2012 Toyota 4 Runner. 110,000 miles and in great shape. New tires. Getting ready to list it. My kids learned to drive in it. Great first car for any kid. Will last forever. Never been wrecked. Have only had to change oil and tires. Great small SUV.

Mazda Miata's are the exception. Very good little cars.

Them breaks and battery must be struggling.

No....I have had a couple new batteries and a brake job or 2...changed the filters too if you want to get picky. I am a stickler for maintenance...whatever was due got done.

A friend of mine had one his parents gave him. He hated that thing. I loved it. I tried to buy it from him, but his dad demanded it back when he stopped driving it.
I think it is still parked in the old man's garage.

VW’s are generally garbage in terms of mechanical reliability based solely on Consumer Reports survey data on repairs and maintenance.
As Cosmo said 4Runner and I would add Camry. My son has had a 2001 4 Runner for about 3 years or so now. Great vehicle, it a 4 cylinder so maybe a little underpowered but it has been relatively bullet proof.
My daughter(you’re not getting pics you pervs) has had a high mileage 2012 Camry for just over a year and also performing great.
They’re out there, just keep you’re eyes open.

I’ve got a 2013 Civic and 2013 Tiguan....both of my kids say there is no comparison, the VW is hands down the nicer of the two. The Tiguan blows away the civic in regards to quickness. As far as maintaining them, the VW requires an oil change every 10k Miles and that maintainence, at the dealer, is $100. The civic gets oil changes every 6k, which comes out close to $100/yr as well. I haven’t had any trouble with either vehicle and I paid the same amt for both of them. Both kids also agree that the Tiguan is refits girly vehicle, which I agree.
