Finishing #6 in the rankings with a NY6 bowl win will almost always result in a contract extension, regardless of the school. Can't believe some of you mouth breathers don't understand this.
Just because something is "always" done a certain way doesn't mean it's being done for a good reason.
Sometimes conventional thinking is wrong.

No, LSU loses out to other schools in recruiting due to weak coaches (Ensminger, O-Line coaches)

1.) He's got 3 years left on his deal. a 2 year extension is the right thing to do.
2.) Considering what we looked like last Spring, he (and his staff) coached us up to a 10-3 season. He's done a nice job of roster management and motivating our team.
3.) When Les was here, he was Top 5-Top 10 highest paid HC. Granted, Les had some real skins on the wall, but.... it's LSU. We've paid our HC well since Saban was here.
4.) At $3.5 mill, there were 35 other sitting HC's that made more than he did last year.

absolutely true, this contract extension is just another example of how terrible our AD Joe Alleva is

what took you so long?

If jumbo just had the exact same season that this lsu staff had y’all would be ready to suck him off everyday and if he didn’t want you to you would send your wife to him. Guy earned an extension doesn’t really matter he will be fired probably before a contract runs out. I wonder how many coaches actually coach throughout their contract at a school.

Saban uses this tactic very often.
"You know who hasn't beat me in 8 years? LSU. Don't go there. The newest coach is a joke, and I wouldn't hire him on my staff even at his position of expertise. He's 0-3 against me already and I've shut him out twice."
Is that an easier argument than "he doens't have a contract that will be the life of your time there,"?

He has to be able to recruit freshmen and sophomores and if the decision on whether to extend or not was delayed 10 months, until the end of the 2019 season, there would not be enough time for him to make up the ground he lost on those players.
Why would you place your coach in a position where he’d have to make up ground?

The entire point of O was a cheap head coach. That was the sell.

Saban can make that argument against just about every single HC out there
Bama better not try to go head to head with Liberty on a recruit. Hugh Freeze owned his arse. Saban would be powerless

Maybe because Alleva knows his job better than 50 random haters on an anonymous sports board?
Could that be it? I'm just guessing.

Always comes back to winning whether people want to believe it or not.
That 0-3 is why Saban could tell recruits that the head coach here makes players eat his scabs and they'd believe him.

Wouldve preferred to see us start competing with Bama(scoring more than the Citadel is a start)
Did the Citadel beat four top 10 teams this year and finish #6 in the country? I guess we should just worry about scoring more points on Bama than overall results. Got it.

Schools will negatively recruit because Orgeron is our coach, and he thinks an offense from 2004 is cutting edge.
That offense smoked Miami and Georgia and UCF and ... never mind. Nothing anyone can say will make you like LSU.

Finishing #6 in the rankings
What decade are you living in? AP has been irrelevant a long time. Do we want to play for championships or do we want to be UCF and marvel at final AP rankings?

The real reason is very simple.
Joe Alleva is a fricking idiot and he has now bent conned by O not once but twice.
He fell for O’s BS that not having an extension would hurt recruiting. And joe fell for it.

Yeah I don’t get it. You only extend a coach If you’re worried about them possibly leaving once their contract is up. Where is he going to go?
Wrong. You also extend a coach for continuity reassurance to recruits. How can you expect a HS Senior to commit to LSU for 4 years when the HC doesn't have a contract that long?

The real answer is because Alleva needs to capitalize on the fact that O was his pick (remember “I am the search”?) and by extending O it keeps alleva safe because he knows whenever O gets fired, he won’t be picking his replacement because he will he in the unemployment line with him.
This makes no logical sense.
