The real answer, right or wrong, is this has become standard practice in college football.

no it has not.

there is nothing standard about extending a coach 2 years into a 5 year contract.

there is nothing about recruiting that makes a coach or program more attractive because of extending a coach.

there is nothing about this that is being done for any reason other than Alleva saying "nanny nanny boo boo, you all wanted me and O gone in October 2017, so screw you" while he sticks his tongue out at you and makes a fart noise.

Why?

If for no better reason than to piss off all the No-O's.

Astute analysis.

I’ll anxiously await your list. You made the claim, not me.

ETA: Am I to assume Central Michigan has the resources to pay more than 3.5 and be covered under your broad criteria?

Start with the ones that didn't finish in the top-10 in the final standings AND didn't finish in the top-10 in 2019 recruiting.

At least 60 such programs among the Power-5 teams. Look for a dozen in there.

Central Michigan is a Power-5 program?

I wonder if Aranda starts looking elsewhere with this news. I wonder if he was hoping to get the job in the near future.

You know that poll is done before the bowls, right?

Uh sure do. Why do you care about the AP poll? Its worthless. Do you want to be in top four of CFP final poll or parade around like UCF?

Surely you arent saying you care more about the final AP poll vs Final CFP poll?!

The CFP poll is what we are playing for. AP is a feel good empty reward.

Exactly, Saban doesn’t really have anything to sell at Alabama. As long as we keep our guard up, and the coach is under contract for the requisite number of years, losing players to him will not be an issue.

I dont think it's crazy to say that this(O) is still an experiment. Extending his contract is basically saying we've seen enough to KNOW this is going to work.

And thats a really dumb thing to say at this point.

Well... You're wrong.

You could have said "experiment" prior to the 2018 season. But afterwards (and with the '19 recruiting class), it looks silly.

You didn’t mention P5 in the original comment.

Yes, I saw this the first time. I’ll try to spell it out a little more clearly for you. I’m waiting for you to name 12 programs who fit your criteria and:
A) Can pay more than 3.5
B) Would want to pay Ed Orgeron more than 3.5
C) Would have such low expectations that he wouldn’t have to put up with bullshite.

Nothing to sell except that they beat the shite out of us every year... and oh yeah they play for national championships.

I literally just provided you with 5 examples just in the SEC the last 4-5 years. Yes, it has become standard practice. You may not agree with the practice and I don't like it either, but it has absolutely become the norm

I'm not agreeing with the guy you're talking to but anyone in a P5 conference can pay $3.5MM a year. A lot of (most) P5 programs have lower expectations than LSU. As to who would pay Ed O $3.5MM, I don't know.

Eh, that kind of stuff isn’t really important in the grand scheme of things. 14 year old freshman recruits spend much more time researching contract details on the internet than they do watching games or going to camps and what not.
