Because I know thats the plan. They will continue to do this every year while Dell is here.
And a guy like Cook is light years ahead of FJ right now. Same with Crawford. Likely will have two more guards signed this offseason AND Moore. Goal is to make the playoffs.

Just saw your BSS article too so I'm about to give that a read in a bit.
But it makes sense looking at our draft history. Outside of the players Dell drafted in the top 10 and kept on the roster (AD, Rivers, and Buddy Hield) the rest went to the D-league to develop - Darius Miller, Russ Smith, Pierre Jackson, and Cheick Diallo.
Good call

I'm not gonna take too much credit. Not like I read the tea leaves. It's literally what I was told. This is their way of getting first round guys in the second round. Jackson will be next years "first rounder" just like Diallo is this years first rounder.

don't look at this as the Pelicans 2017 second rounder. This is the Pelicans 2018 first rounder.
ugh. not saying it's your idea, but the semantics here kill me.
i'd also like the redshirt plan a lot more if they had a G-League team in place.

Sounds like it's been working.
Pierre was traded to pick Russ, Russ was a filler with Rivers in a bigger trade between Memphis and Boston, which netted us QPon. neither of them are in the NBA.
Darius Miller got us and gave us nothing.
Diallo has given us nothing.
Sounds like Dell needs a new plan. We are easily the worst drafting team since we came into existence. The only pick we can hang our hat on is David West. CP3 and AD were no brainers so you don't get credit for that.

They didn't have one last year and they were very happy with Diallo's progress
Expect something similar, where Jackson gets practice reps with the team and game reps in the G-League

David West wasn't a no brainer FWIW. He was an older undersized PF that wasn't a world class athlete. The NBA game was a different world back then though

Why? He probably should have stayed in school, but he had a good combine and once Trevon Duval committed with Allen coming back there was too crowded of a backcourt. DX had him projected in the 2018 1st round. He's one of the youngest guys in the draft and is going to spend time this offseason rehabbing. He's not ready for the NBA and won't be this year. It was a future upside pick.

Tha'ts not what I meant. There's a period there, not a comma. What I said was West is the only pick we've ever made, outside of the no brainers of CP3 and AD, that has been a solid pick for us, in our existence.

i thought Diallo looked better than anticipated in limited minutes. I hope we actually continue to develop him and use him rather than jettison him like we typically do with our second round picks.

If Diallo was in last nights draft, I take him somewhere between 12-17

i'm fine with the pick (i know absolutely nothing about the player) and the idea in general. it's a smart strategy. i wish they had started using it about 4 years ago.
but it's not a 2018 1st round pick. saying so is just sort of bullshite PR to me. for instance, what type of contract are they signing him to? things can get tricky there, unlike with some of the built in protections for teams w/ 1st rounders.
i'm fine with them dealing the pick for Cousins. they should do that deal 10/10 times. and i'm fine with taking this guy. just be honest to your fans about what you did

good to know. having that experience with Diallo should come in handy for the team.
are they thinking Diallo can hold down the fort as 3rd big man?

It is PR bullshite, but like you said, it's a good strategy they should have started 4 years ago. If this is truly a market inefficiency Demps has discovered, will he be around long enough to see it pay off?

I'm guessing he'll get what Diallo got, a 4 year deal where the 4th year is an RFA tender offer year.

They see Diallo on a similar timeline as Capela, which means yes, he could be a 9th or 10th man this year if all goes well

So the plan is to hope our "first round" picks can be an end of the bench player for us in a year or two?

What did you expect? Him to challenge Davis or Cousins for starting time? A rookie being rotational bench player is pretty much what you expect unless they're a top of the lottery guy.
Posted on 6/23/17 at 11:09 am to TeddyPadillac
If you get that, its a win. If Jackson is a 7th man in 2-3 years, that VASTLY exceeds expectations for a pick at 31.
Do you know the median PPG for a 31st pick? It's 2.6ppg
Guys like Allen Crabbe are among your best case scenarios -- a guy who takes a few years and then takes off.
And Jackson has potential to be better than that, but it takes time. I know we live in a microwave society, but you can't truly expect these picks to be guys that really matter anytime soon. Can you?

I wouldn't necessarily say it is PR bullshite. Pels have not directly tried to sell the narrative that these guys are proxy 1st rounders for the following year, they just see it that way because of the redshirt year both need. Both were top 25 recruits, both were McDonalds All Americans, both disappointed their freshman year, both are raw talents with upside, and both would have projected as 1st rounders had they stayed in school.
I don't think it is a market inefficiency, but rather a worthwhile gamble at the top of the 2nd round. Second rounders that turn into anything are rare so go for the homerun. Great tools that you believe were not fully utilized in college and you hope to develop. Using second rounders means if they don't pan out, no big deal. They get 3 year slightly above minimum deals. You have 3 years to develop them and turn them into at minmimum role players with their rookie year being a redshirt. If they show as decent role players, you re-sign them (age 22) to a reasonable deal and try to take them to the next level on the next contract.
You give them very limited minutes in situations where they can succeed with their natural talent. If so they can also potentially be used in trades if necessary as upside young guys because they still can't buy a beer, but have shown in limited minutes against "NBA" players. However, I think the best use for them is to fill out the roster with young talent that should have cheap 2nd contracts with bird rights.
