I think it's a good time for movies and a great time for television.

Yeah, movies being "Predictably Bad" is another problem.

For instance, the recycled "Upper middle class dad hates his daughter's love of her life" comedy featuring Bryan Cranston and James Franco. Most moviegoers knew this movie was going to be a dud.

It depends on what type of movies you are looking for. Arrival was one of the best I've seen in years. There are other good genre movies like interstellar, some great superhero movies I never ever thought would be made. Some well done war movies like hacksaw ridge and the upcoming, great looking Dunkirk. Other just well done stories like Sicario. But offhand I can't think of a single straight up comedy that I've liked in 10 years or more.

My theory:

Todd Phillips and Judd Apatow started pumping out overproduced and over budget comedies that began to flop around 2011, and now the studios take a verrrrrrrry soft approach to comedies.

Sometimes it takes distance before you can appreciate what you have.

When I was in high school, I thought the 70's was the worst decade for movies. A decade or two later, I realized how wrong I was.

I'm not a big fan of musicals, but I simply disagree

Regarding the OP, I think the failures of hollywoods big budgeted/advertised movies make things look at lot worse. There are still really good movies to see, they just don't happen to be the ones we see during commercial scenes every 6 minutes

2009-2014:

Zombieland
I love you man
The Hangover
Observe and Report
The Other Guys
Hot Tub Time Machine
Dinner for Schmucks
MacGruber
Bridesmaids
Hall Pass
Horrible Bosses
Cedar Rapids
Paul
Goon
Ted
21 Jump street
The Campaign
This is the end
We're the Millers
The incredible Burt Wonderstone
Bad Grandpa

However, since 2014 there has been major gap in solid comedies.

Early aughts were pretty good.

Amelie and well known directors today making earlier films.

And Spiderman...kicking off comic book buzz and item for the next 20 years.

The only movie from that entire list I can see being considered an all-time great classic in 20 years time is maybe Mad Max: Fury Road. Maybe.

That's like saying all of the great football coaches is coaching college football. Acting in movies is a much more prestigious, challenging and lucrative gig.

The 90s was one of the worst decades of filmmaking. Sure, there were quite a few enjoyable watched. There were very few truly Great movies

's a circle jerk. Sure it's a good movie, but give me a fricking break. It's not an instance classic. It's not even in the ballpark of the best film has to offer.

Much like the year a silent (for the most part) film won. I can't remember the name. But again, it was a give me a break moment. Just a film made to try and appeal to Oscar voters.

I felt like the '90s had a lot more great movies in the '80s. There were very few great movies made in the '80s. The latter half of that decade was particularly horrific. Everybody in Hollywood was trying to make the next great blockbuster after Star Wars that it killed off film-making as an artistic medium. Hollywood started to heavily accommodate their films to children because they could make a lot more money through merchandising such as clothing, books, toys and video games. They stopped gearing their films to adult consumers because there wasn't as much financial incentive to make those types of movies.

The past several years have been absolutely atrocious in terms of creativity and quality compared to previous decades. I have lost track of the number of remakes from past years' movies.
