Out of our control. This board is at least 80%-90% pro tank. But if they are going to make "win now" trades, trading a pick for a guy early in his rookie contract is about the lowest potential for error move they can make.

How is trading for this guy and what he is likely to become as a player better than keeping options open that could land you better or different kinds of players?
I agree with corndeaux in that if they're thinking of doing this they should see what other moves they can make that are better. But if they follow this up with packaging Jones for a 1st, I don't hate this move even though I do hate the direction.
I said several weeks back I was on board with trading Holiday and tanking. The team is .500ish with AD/Jrue and while I do see potential for internal improvement, they just don't have any external moves that are likely to add another B or better player to the mix outside of getting lucky in the draft or hitting on a reclamation project like Lance.

My bigger question is what are we doing?
We've made a switch to small ball, and our defense has sky rocketed b/c of it. We seem determined to get a big center right now, but you do that, and your entire philosophy on defense will have to change. You can't just have a guy like Okafor or Brook Lopez switching everytime. That's the problem with Asik's defense.
Going with Okafor to play the Kanter role, which I like, at least would keep the idea of small ball in tack. Getting a big 5 like Vucevic or Lopez completely changes how you play on both ends of the floor. Only mentioning and bitching about this b/c of the reports about the interest in those two.
Okafor is capable of coming off the bench and scoring 16 a night. That's not something you generally find with a mid to late first round pick. And he's cheap, which I always like about centers, and bench players.
I will be beyond pissed off if we somehow give Jrue and a first round pick away with Philly. I'll give Jrue and a first away if we are getting back a really good player on a decent contract, like Fournier and Vucevic.

But didn't you get like 90% of that with T Jones? Or, couldn't you if you use him properly? Why give up an asset for a slightly better version (maybe) of the same guy?
Yes, Jones is giving us about 80-90% of what Okafor can now. However, he is on a one year deal and I am assuming will cost more than Okafor going forward. Okafor is younger and cheaper with higher upside at this point. If we can dump Ajinca and only costs a lottery protected pick in 2018, then I wouldn't hate it.
I think Teddy brings up a good point. What is the direction of this team? My initial thoughts when I heard the rumors yesterday were, why in the hell do we go after a traditional 5 when it appears we have committed to the small ball style of play? If this move is part of a bigger plan that makes sense then I would be okay with it. However, this administration has shown nothing to make me, or anyone else, confident.

You have to think that whenever the Pelicans trade smoke appears, all GMs in the league lick their chops and pick up the phone.

They're probably doing more than licking chops.

what's the latest fun bunch?

There is a reason Ryan wasnt moved last season. Dell isnt going to just give players away.

To me it's not about exploring the other trades available now. It's asking - What kind of players can I get for my 2018 pick this summer or next February and are those guys likely to help me more than Okafor?

Well, he did end up just giving Ryno away.

Just let them go for nothing then waste the money that was freed up

And we see what that did for our club.
I am for the trade if it is a move in conjunction with other moves. If we are moving Tyreke and Jones for a 1, and moving Jrue and an amalgam of other assets for more flexibility and ammo, then adding Okafor makes sense. That would give us 3 pieces to a much bigger puzzle with draft picks to up more talent. The pick we give up needs to be top 10 protected, and we need to figure out how to shed contracts.
Add a PG/SF this draft and play buddy 35+ minutes the rest of the season. Next season add another young piece and have the cap dollars to attract a legit FA.

The point was in regards to gms beating down the Pelicans door to get into trade discussions with you. Dell isnt going to let someone just trade rape him.

So if the plan is trading the 2017 pick for a young vet, does that mean they aren't trying whole-heartedly to make the playoffs since the higher their pick the better vet they can trade for?
I think that's too much forward thinking for this group. I could be wrong on Okafor taking Jones' role, but to me this move makes the most sense as "We can't afford to keep Jones and execute our other offseason plans, so how can we replace him cheaply?"
As flawed as Jones and Okafor both are, they can score. Someone that can pick up the scoring load for AD when he's out is a big need on this team, otherwise you're looking at starting each season with 10-15 automatic losses.

Which is whats wrong with the NBA. Teams trading pieces to contenders and not getting squat in return. If there was a deal to be made, he would make it. Just like he traded Ish to the 76ers.

once, and he has done the same to other teams.

The only trade he's ever made that has made a difference is getting Ryno from Orlando for basically nothing.
everything else was either insignificant or not good for us.
Getting Reke wasn't terrible, but giving up Lopez to do so started us in a downward spiral at that position that we have yet to recover from, and are about to do something stupid to try to make up for it.

at the same time, you have to wonder what WAS offered for those guys whom everyone knew would be free agents anyways.. why would you trade away assets for guys that have made it clear they intend to test free agency ..

Supposedly they had 2 offers of 2018 1sts for Ryno and Demps thought Ryno's Bird Rights were more valuable than a future late 1st.
